The New England Patriots are the defending Super Bowl champions, and they have not lost a game since Tom Brady became their quarterback back in 2001. They play in Gillette Stadium which had already been built before 1993 so it technically isn’t new at all. Mac Jones, the quarterback, passed the exam. With considerable weight on his shoulders, the first-round draft selection of the New England Patriots in 2021 came from Alabama. After missing the playoffs for the first time in 20 years, Bill Belichick needed a quarterback to lead the attack.
With Tom Bradly departing for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Pats will entrust the offense to experienced quarterback Cam Newton in 2020. It wasn’t pleasant.
Following four other quarterbacks were selected, New England selected Jones with the 15th overall choice after a 7-9 season. Jones took over when Newton was dismissed before the completion of training camp. Jones had incredible calmness on the field, just like he did at Alabama. He overcame a shaky start to lead them back into the playoffs with a seven-game winning run.
While most Patriots supporters supported Jones’ selection, the same cannot be said about the team’s top choice in 2022. When New England picked Cole Strange, a guard from Chattanooga who many predicted would not make it through the third round, many people were surprised. For the second choice, Belichick went with Baylor’s Tyquan Thornton, a fast wide receiver. Mel Kiper, an ESPN draft expert, graded the Patriots selection as a C+.
“Are we permitted to critique Bill Belichick’s draft?” “Though the Mac Jones choice from 2021 seems to be a success, the Patriots haven’t exactly lit it up during the previous several Aprils,” Kiper noted. “I simply don’t believe their first two choices this year were worth anything.”
The Patriots embarked on an unexpected free-agent binge last year. This year has been rather calm. A trade for wide receiver DeVante Parker was their most major move. Their AFC East competitors, on the other hand, made a splash. The Miami Dolphins signed wide receiver Tyreek Hill, while the Buffalo Bills acquired Von Miller to their defense.
The Patriots should be a playoff club at best, even if Jones avoids the sophomore slump.
