Italian Lorenzo Sonego, the No 10 seed, secured a spot in the final of the Winston-Salem Open by defeating Belgian David Goffin 6-3, 6-2 at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex on Friday evening.
Sonego, who is currently ranked No 58, will now await the winner of the match between Spanish wildcard Pablo Carreno Busta and American Alex Michelsen, the No 11 seed.
Before his victory over Goffin, Sonego had impressive wins against Swiss Dominic Stricker (6-4, 6-1), Chinese Juncheng Shang (W/O), and Russian Pavel Kotov, the No 15 seed (6-3, 7-5).
In earlier rounds of the Winston-Salem tournament, Goffin, ranked No 90, defeated Spaniard Jaume Munar (7-5, 4-6, 6-3), Italian Luciano Darderi, the No 5 seed (6-2, 6-4), Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech, the No 12 seed (6-3, 6-3), and Australian Rinky Hijikata, the No 16 seed (6-1, 6-3).
