In 2018, the Davis Cup underwent controversial changes with a partnership with Gerard Pique’s company Kosmos, switching from a classic knockout format to a group stage followed by an eight-team Finals event. However, these changes were met with criticism from fans and players.
The ITF has now announced a partial reversal of these changes, with the September group stages going back to seven home-or-away ties played across two days. The Finals event will still be held in one city with the winner of each September tie qualifying for it.
Additionally, the Billie Jean King Cup will transition to an eight-nation final similar to the Davis Cup, with qualifiers in April and finals in November. The aim is to bring the men’s and women’s international team competitions closer together under the World Cup of Tennis banner.
ITF President, David Haggerty, expressed excitement for the future of both competitions with these format amendments.
