The No 15 seed, Ukrainian player Marta Kostyuk, advanced to the round of 16 at the Western & Southern Open by defeating New Zealander qualifier Lulu Sun with a score of 6-3, 7-5 at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Cincinnati on Wednesday night.
Ranked No 21, Kostyuk will face either the top seed, Pole Iga Swiatek, or French qualifier Varvara Gracheva in her next match.
The 22-year-old Ukrainian previously defeated Elise Mertens (6-4, 2-6, 6-4) in the earlier round of the Cincy Open.
In the first round of the Cincy Open, Sun, ranked No 64, emerged victorious against Linda Noskova with a score of 6-4, 7-6 (4).
