Beatriz Haddad Maia, the top seed, defeated Swiss qualifier Viktorija Golubic 6-3, 7-5 to advance to the second round of the Cleveland Open at Jacobs Pavilion on Tuesday night.
The Brazilian had previously lost all four previous matches against Golubic.
Haddad Maia, ranked No 23, will face Spaniard Cristina Bucsa in the next round.
