The NBA playoffs are over, but don’t let that fool you: the NBA season doesn’t officially end until June. In the meantime, the competitive world of sports offers us plenty of ways to fill the void in our lives. In the case of the Milwaukee Bucks, that means reviewing the activities of the Antetokounmpo brothers.
There is a Greek word, “antetokounmpo”, that has become quite common in basketball circles over the past few years. It refers to the Greek-American basketball player who is the oldest of three brothers who play in the NBA. The first Antetokounmpo brother was Giannis, who has been part of the Milwaukee Bucks roster since 2014, and he won the NBA Championship in 2018. The second Antetokounmpo brother was Thanasis, who was drafted by the Atlanta Hawks in 2017, and he played for the Hawks during the 2018-2019 season. The Greek Freak, Giannis Antetokounmpo, is well-known to even the most casual NBA fan. He’s a five-time All-Star and All-NBA forward at the age of 26. He’s also a four-time All-Defensive team pick, the NBA’s Most Improved Player in 2016-17, a Defensive Player of the Year (2019-20), the current NBA Finals MVP, and a back-to-back NBA MVP (2018-20). You may be surprised to learn that his three brothers, Thanasis, Kostas, and Alex Antetokounmpo, are all professional basketball players.
Giannis isn’t the first of his brother’s to win an NBA championship. When the Milwaukee Bucks won in 2021, Kostas already had a championship. Giannis and Thanasis joined him. Alex, their fourth basketball-playing sibling, has now joined the previous three brothers in winning an NBA championship. It isn’t, however, on par with what the others have achieved.
All three players, Thanasis, Kostas, and Giannis Antetokounmpo, have won NBA championships.
Kostas Antetokounmpo, 23, is the first Antetokounmpo sibling to win an NBA title. In 2018, the Philadelphia 76ers selected the 6-foot-10 forward in the late second round. He never played for the club, instead opting to sign with the Dallas Mavericks as a rookie.
When the Dallas Mavericks released Kostas, the Los Angeles Lakers claimed him, and he was a member of the 2019-20 Larry O’Brien Trophy-winning LA NBA Bubble quartet. Despite his ring, Kostas has only played 4.0 minutes a game during his career.
Giannis led the Bucks to the following season’s championship, scoring 35.1 points per game while guiding his team to a series victory against the Phoenix Suns.
However, it was a double win for the Antetokounmpo family, since elder brother Thanasis (29) also played for Milwaukee. He played 9.7 minutes per game on average, somewhat better than Kostas, and appeared in 13 2021 playoff games (for brief periods).
Alex Antetokounmpo is now an NBA champion (kind of).

Alex Antetokounmpo, 19, was the only one of the four Antetokounmpo siblings in the NBA who had never won a championship until recently.
All of that changed in 2021, when the undrafted rookie hoisted the NBA championship trophy in Las Vegas during the NBA Summer League. Alex earned a championship with the Sacramento Kings Summer League squad when they defeated the Boston Celtics 100-67.
Alex saw action in three of the team’s five Summer League games, although he did not score in any of them. Regardless of his performance, he can now claim to be (sort of) an NBA champion, much like his siblings.

Alex Antetokounmpo began his basketball career in the United States at Dominican High School in Whitefish Bay, Wisconsin, as the youngest Antetokounmpo sibling. He was named first-team all-state as a junior and senior in high school. According to NBA.com, he averaged 20 points, 7.3 rebounds, 2.4 assists, and 1.6 blocks per game in his senior year in high school.
A few American college basketball schools were interested in signing the NBA star’s brother, but Alex chose to play for UCAM Murcia CB in Spain for a year. While he was a standout for the club’s second team, he only participated in one senior game.
While his game isn’t quite ready for the NBA yet, he has many of Giannis’ and his older brothers’ physical characteristics. He stands 6-foot-8 with a wingspan of 7-foot-2 and excellent agility.
Many prospective NBA players in his situation would be doomed by his on-court shortcomings, but since he is an Antetokounmpo, he will almost certainly get a few bites at the pro basketball apple. He could even wind up on a (actual) NBA championship team someday if he’s anything like his siblings.
