The Dallas Cowboys made a franchise-altering transaction this week in an effort to save money this summer. They sent wide receiver Amari Cooper to the Cleveland Browns in return for compensation from the third round of the draft.
Cooper’s departure from Dallas had been rumored for some weeks. The Cowboys weren’t hiding the fact that they wanted to free up cap space, and Cooper’s high $20 million contract made him an easy target for a trade.
Cooper played with the Cowboys for four seasons, from 2018 to 2021. Now that he’s off the roster, it’s worth questioning whether Dallas regrets trading for him in the first place.

Cooper was acquired by the Cowboys in a trade with the Las Vegas Raiders in 2018 for their 2019 first-round selection. Making the deal was a risky move. The Dallas front staff, on the other hand, thought Cooper was superior than any of the receivers they might have picked later in the first round.
Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk analyzed the decision. He also looked at who Dallas may have picked in 2019 if they hadn’t given up their first-round pick for Cooper.
Cooper was paid $53.9 million by the Cowboys from 2019 until 2021. They would have earned a slotted four-year, $11.4 million deal if they had picked a receiver with the 27th pick in 2019. They’re debating whether to activate the player’s fifth-year option right now.
In that place, they could have selected A.J. Brown, DK Metcalf, or Deebo Samuel. They may have also ended up with N’Keal Harry.
That’s why they ended up trading for Cooper. In place of a lottery ticket, to get certainty.
Despite this, they elected to pay a high price for security. And when it was time to move on, they didn’t receive much.

Amari Cooper’s problem in Dallas was money, not productivity.
Instead of dealing for Cooper, it would have been better to pick A.J. Brown, DK Metcalf, or Deebo Samuel. It’s seldom that easy, however. Dallas went after Cooper in 2018 because they wanted a proven number one wide receiver who could help Prescott and the Cowboys’ offense right away.
Cooper accomplished just that, by all reports and metrics. Cooper has been Prescott’s favorite target for the last three seasons, and he has proven to be the Cowboys’ franchise quarterback of the future.
Cooper wasn’t transferred to Cleveland for pennies on the dollar because of his production. Rather, it was owing to Dallas’ failure to keep track of their payments. Prescott, Cooper, Ezekiel Elliott, Demarcus Lawrence, and numerous offensive lineman all received big deals. It was necessary for someone to leave.
The Cowboys should be pleased with the outcome of the transaction.

Cooper is no longer a part of the Cowboys, which is a shame. However, it’s difficult not to regard the industry with admiration.
The Cowboys did, after all, give up a first-round selection. They also added a wide receiver who had 1,000-yard seasons in both 2019 and 2020. That’s a bargain that most front offices would accept.
