French tennis player Arthur Fils advanced to the quarter-finals of the Japan Open after Italian Matteo Berrettini retired during their match at the Ariake Colosseum in Tokyo on Friday.
Fils, who is ranked No. 24, was leading 6-7 (5), 0-0 when Berrettini, ranked No. 45, withdrew from the match at the Ariake Colosseum in Tokyo.
The 20-year-old Frenchman is set to face American Ben Shelton, the No. 8 seed, in the next round.
Fils defeated American Taylor Fritz, the top seed, in the previous round of the Tokyo Open with a score of 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.
In the preceding round of the Tokyo Open, the Italian secured a victory against Dutch qualifier Botic van de Zandschulp with a score of 6-3, 6-4.
