Beibit Zhukayev, a wildcard from Kazakhstan, advanced to the quarterfinals of the Almaty Open after No. 5 seed Tomas Machac retired during their match at Almaty Arena on Thursday night. Zhukayev, ranked No. 213, was leading 3-1 when Machac, ranked No. 25, withdrew.
Zhukayev will now face the winner of the match between Russian Karen Khachanov, the No. 3 seed, and Finn Otto Virtanen.
Prior to his latest victory, Beibit Zhukayev defeated Lebanese qualifier Benjamin Hassan (6-4, 6-1).
In the previous round, Tomas Machac defeated Kazakh wildcard Timofey Skatov (6-3, 6-4).
