Thiem Recognized with Ceremony in Vienna

In their 2020 meeting, Thiem emerged victorious on Sunday against the German player, with kind words exchanged about the 30-year-old.

“First and foremost, I am losing a friend on the Tour, but we have also had some great matches together. It’s not really goodbye,” said Zverev, adding, “I hope he gets bored in a year or two and decides to come back to the Tour.”

A tribute from the Big Three, including Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, and Roger Federer, was also shared.

“Thank you for everything you have given to all of us, especially to the world of tennis,” Djokovic expressed. “I am happy that you have the chance to say goodbye in Vienna. One last dance. I wish you a fantastic tournament, enjoying it with your family present, because you deserve it my friend. All the best.”

“You have always been a great guy, both on and off the court,” Federer said in Thiem’s native language. “Always fair. Your friendship has been important to me on the Tour. We always got along well, and it meant a lot to me. Best of luck in the future, and a huge congratulations on your incredible career, Dominic. I am certain we will meet again soon, but for now, have a wonderful evening.”

Thiem joins Andy Murray as one of the only two players outside the Big Three to have at least five wins against Federer, Nadal, and Djokovic.

The 17-time ATP title winner shared the significance of his retirement ceremony, where several Vienna Open players formed a guard of honor as he walked onto the center court.

“I couldn’t have asked for a better last Sunday in Vienna. I hope to see many of you again on Tuesday,” Thiem expressed. “It is incredibly painful that this journey has come to an end, but it has been a fantastic time.

“It has been an incredible journey. You, my opponents and friends, have been the most important part, and it has always been a pleasure to be with you. Your presence today means a great deal to me.”
