According to Dallas Cowboys insider Bobby Belt of 105.3 The Fan, Amari Cooper and Demarcus Lawrence are the most probable cap-saving moves the Cowboys will make this offseason.
Cooper is coming off a season in which CeeDee Lamb surpassed him significantly. Lawrence only has 3.0 sacks in seven games since he was out for a long period due to injury. When considering their poor 2021 seasons, cutting any of these players makes sense.
Furthermore, eliminating these two players would almost completely fix the Cowboys’ looming cap problem. Cooper’s deal includes a “potential out,” which will save Dallas $16 million in cap space (Spotrac). Lawrence has a possible out, saving Dallas $8 million in cap space.
Simply dismissing two older veterans freed up $22 million in cap space.
Dallas must continue to pick well.
Due to their great drafting over the last two seasons, Dallas can justify these large cutbacks. CeeDee Lamb, Micah Parsons, and Trevon Diggs are among the important contributors they’ve secured. Lamb is a better, younger version of Amari Cooper, and Parsons has shown he can fill in for Lawrence at defensive end if necessary.
If the Cowboys want to go deeper in the playoffs in the future, they’ll have to repeat their recent draft success. Dak Prescott, Ezekiel Elliott, and the offensive line still have a lot of money invested in them. Building a team around them will need talented rookies on short-term contracts.
Getting rid of Cooper’s and Lawrence’s high cap numbers would be a good start, but there’s still a lot of work to be done in Dallas.
