Romanian Irina-Camelia Begu advanced to the quarter-finals of the Palermo Open after defeating Dutch player Arantxa Rus, the No 5 seed, with a score of 6-2, 7-5 at A.S.D. Country Time Club.
Begu, who is currently ranked No 142, is set to face the winner of the match between Russian player Erika Andreeva and American player Ann Li in the next round.
The 33-year-old Romanian player also secured a victory against Spaniard Marina Bassols Ribera (6-0, 6-0) in the previous round of the Palermo tournament.
In the first round of the tournament, Rus, who is ranked No 62, defeated Italian player Martina Trevisan (6-7 (5), 6-4, 6-2).
