German player Eva Lys advanced to the quarter-finals of the Hungarian Open after American player Bernarda Pera retired during their match at Római Tennis Academy in Budapest. Lys, ranked No 129, was leading 7-6 (6), 4-1 when Pera, ranked No 82, withdrew from the match on Thursday night.
The 22-year-old German will now face the winner of the match between Chinese player Xiyu Wang, the No 3 seed, and Slovak player Rebecca Sramkova in the next round.
In the previous round of the Budapest tournament, Eva Lys defeated Argentinian player Nadia Podoroska, the No 6 seed, with a score of 6-3, 6-0. Meanwhile, Bernarda Pera had beaten German player Tamara Korpatsch (7-5, 2-6, 6-2) in the previous round of the tournament.
Other second-round results at the Budapest WTA 250 event at Római Tennis Academy on clay courts included matchups between Anna Bondar and Ella Seidel, Diana Shnaider and Ekaterina Makarova, Xiyu Wang and Rebecca Sramkova, Anna Karolina Schmiedlova defeating Sara Sorribes Tormo (4) with a score of 2-6, 6-2, 6-2, Elina Avanesyan’s victory over Rebeka Masarova with a score of 2-6, 7-5, 6-1, Suzan Lamens’ win against Carole Monnet (Q) with a score of 6-4, 6-0, and Aliaksandra Sasnovich’s victory over Maria Timofeeva with a score of 6-3, 6-4.
