Karolina Muchova, the second seed, advanced to the semifinals of the Palermo Open by defeating Australian Astra Sharma 7-6 (5), 7-6 (6) at A.S.D. Country Time Club on Friday evening.
Ranked No. 35, Muchova will now face Romanian Irina-Camelia Begu in the next round.
In earlier rounds of the tournament, Muchova benefited from the withdrawal of Katarzyna Kawa and defeated Noma Noha Akugue.
Sharma, ranked No. 151, had victories over Russian Anna Blinkova and wildcard Ajla Tomljanovic in previous matches.
