Japanese player Yoshihito Nishioka defeated American Frances Tiafoe, the No. 3 seed, with a score of 7-6 (2), 6-2 to advance to the semi-finals of the Atlanta Open at the Atlanta Athletic Club on Saturday evening.
Nishioka, who is currently ranked No. 86, will face the winner of the match between French player Arthur Rinderknech and Italian qualifier Mattia Bellucci in the next round.
In earlier rounds of the Atlanta Open, Nishioka had victories over American qualifier Zachary Svajda (7-6 (4), 6-3) and American player Mackenzie McDonald (6-3, 6-4).
Tiafoe, ranked No. 29, had previously defeated Russian player Aslan Karatsev (6-4, 3-6, 6-3) in the previous round of the tournament.
