Marina Stakusic, a Canadian qualifier, defeated the No 6 seed Sara Sorribes Tormo from Spain with scores of 7-6 (3), 7-6 to advance to the final of the Abierto Tampico on Saturday.
Stakusic, ranked No 140, will face off against the No 5 seed, Russian Anna Blinkova, in the next match.
Prior to this victory, the 19-year-old Canadian triumphed over Ukrainian qualifier Anastasiya Sobolieva (6-2, 6-2), American Robin Montgomery, the No 7 seed (6-4, 7-6 (5)), and Italian Lucrezia Stefanini (0-6, 6-4, 7-5).
Sorribes Tormo, ranked No 112, emerged victorious against Mexican wildcard Ana Sofia Sanchez (6-0, 6-1), Russian Polina Kudermetova (6-3, 6-4), and German Tatjana Maria, the No 4 seed (7-6 (6), 6-2) in earlier rounds of the tournament.
