When Alex Rodriguez was a young boy, his father left the family when he was just three years old. Rodriguez never really saw his father again until he was a professional baseball player for the New York Yankees. It was a reunion that Rodriguez would later describe as having a “heartbreaking yet memorable” feel to it.

A few weeks ago, I chatted briefly with Daniel Rodriguez, Alex’s father, and father of the year. I wanted to know how this man’s life changed after Alex Rodriguez showed up in his life. How did that interaction shape him as a father? What have they been up to since?
Long before he was voted MVP as the New York Yankees’ third baseman, future All-Star Alex Rodriguez was just a young baseball fan. Rodriguez grew up primarily in Miami under the care of his mother. It wasn’t until 2000, when Rodriguez was one of the best players in baseball, that he was reunited with his father, Victor, after a long absence.

Rodriguez, then with the Seattle Mariners, was months away from signing a 10-year, $252 million contract with the Texas Rangers. The Mariners, in their first season without Ken Griffey Jr, traveled to Minnesota for a four-game series against the Twins. This trip was important to Rodriguez. While in Minnesota, he wanted to see his father Victor again after a long hiatus. Victor left the Rodriguez family and moved to New York in 1984 when Alex was 9 years old. In a 2018 interview with Cigar Aficionado, Alex revealed that he waited for months for his father to return to Miami, but it never happened. In 2000, Rodriguez wanted to see his father again, and they chose Minnesota because Alex said it was a quiet town. With his father present in all four games, Rodriguez had a memorable run in which he scored nine goals in 17 games. In 20 appearances as a shortstop, the All-Star has hit two home runs, six RBI and scored eight runs. Seattle has won three of four games and outscored the Twins 36-13 in that span.
