Amari Cooper’s Potential Exit Makes Michael Gallup’s Return a Must

The Dallas Cowboys traded Amari Cooper to the Oakland Raiders, and while they received draft picks in return, losing a player of his caliber seemed inevitable. That left Michael Gallup as their clear-cut number one receiver heading into 2018. With Dak Prescott’s development this year cemented by consecutive 300+ yard games from him, could it be time for Jerry Jones to start considering other options?

The “Michael Gallup’s return a must” is the article that discusses how Michael Gallup’s return to Dallas Cowboys makes Amari Cooper’s potential exit a must. Read more in detail here: michael gallup.

Going into the offseason, the Dallas Cowboys have a conundrum. They’ve gone over the wage limit by $21.1 million. Jerry Jones and the front staff will have to renegotiate some players’ contracts and part ways with others to create space. Amari Cooper and Michael Gallup, both wide receivers, might wind up on opposing sides of the coin.

Cooper looks to be on his way out. He’s still under contract, but given his salary, the Cowboys may consider him a cap casualty. Gallup, on the other hand, is an unrestricted free agent who is poised to take on a bigger role in Kellen Moore’s offense.

Because of Cooper’s departure, the front management should make getting Gallup back a top priority.

In 2022, Amari Cooper may be playing somewhere else.

Since being acquired from the Oakland Raiders in 2018, Amari Cooper has been a reliable weapon in the Cowboys’ attack. In 56 games, he has 292 catches, 3,893 receiving yards, and 27 touchdowns.

Cooper, despite his major position, looks to be on his way out of Dallas. The Cowboys are expected to release the four-time Pro Bowler before the start of the next league year, March 16, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Cooper has a contract with the club that runs through 2024. If he is retained for the 2022 season, Dallas will owe him $20 million in guaranteed money.

The Alabama product’s deal would only count $6 million against the salary limit if the Cowboys released him. The relocation would free up a substantial sum of money. Even though the front office would still have a lot of work to do, terminating the contract may be a good first step.

The Cowboys will look to Michael Gallup to fill the vacuum left by Amari Cooper’s departure.

If the Cowboys cut Cooper, they’ll have to re-sign Michael Gallup.

There should be a strong market for Amari Cooper’s talents if the Cowboys decide to release him. Philadelphia Eagles, Indianapolis Colts, New York Jets, and Cleveland Browns all need wide receiver assistance and have enough salary room to make a trade happen.

With Cooper “presumably” on his way out, the front office has to make sure Michael Gallup’s future is safe. Gallup recently completed the fourth and final year of his rookie deal and will become a free agent.

The Cowboys are said to be working on a contract, and the two sides are “near.”

In his four seasons in Dallas, the Colorado State graduate has seen his output fluctuate. In 55 games, he has 193 catches for 2,902 yards and 15 touchdowns. In 2019, he had his finest individual season, catching 66 catches for 1,107 yards and six touchdowns.

Gallup was injured in 2021 and missed eight games, but that does not look to be a concern moving into the summer. Cooper would move into the No. 2 receiving slot behind CeeDee Lamb if the Cowboys cut him. Gallup did well as the No. 2 in 2019, and Dallas must be looking for a repeat performance in 2022.

Other wide receiver alternatives for Dallas

The loss of Amari Cooper would have a significant effect on the Cowboys’ offense. In 2021, he had a bad year, although he did miss a handful of games. The 27-year-old wideout is one of the finest route runners in the NFL, and his presence on the field creates more possibilities for the team’s other weapons.

CeeDee Lamb is expected to take over as the No. 1 receiver, with Michael Gallup resuming his position as the second option. Dallas, on the other hand, will need to add more quality to the position if it wants to finish with the league’s best offense once again.

Cedrick Wilson is also an unrestricted free agent, and the Cowboys may be able to keep him for a fair price. In 2021, the Boise State product had a breakthrough. He has a total of 45 receptions for 602 yards and six touchdowns. If the front office can afford it, he should be brought back. Otherwise, Dallas may have to rely on the draft to bolster its depth.

The wide receiver position is deep in the NFL Draft class of 2022. In the first year, many players might come into an offense and contribute. On Day 2, Alabama’s John Metchie, Purdue’s David Bell, Georgia’s George Pickens, and Penn State’s Jahan Dotson are viable alternatives.

Wherever Amari Cooper goes, he’ll almost certainly land on his feet. The Cowboys had better have a plan in place to replace his output.
