American qualifier Amanda Anisimova defeated Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, the No 7 seed, with a score of 6-1, 6-7 (4), 6-4 to advance to the quarter-finals of the Washington Open at the William H.G. FitzGerald Tennis Center on Wednesday.
Anisimova, who is ranked No 176, is set to face the winner of the match between American Caroline Dolehide and Russian Daria Kasatkina, the second seed, in the next round.
In the previous round of the Washington tournament, the 22-year-old American defeated Sloane Stephens (6-3, 7-5).
Pavlyuchenkova, ranked No 33, managed to beat American Ashlyn Krueger (6-3, 4-6, 6-4) in the first round of the Washington tournament.
