‘At the Time I Couldn’t Believe It. I Didn’t Know Why Red Did That’

The 2018 Winter Olympics are underway and the US Women’s Hockey team has been dominating. In their first game against Japan, they won 3-1 with a goal from Hilary Knight. But what was more impressive than the scoreline was the celebration after the game.

The no amendment is absolute meaning is a quote from the famous basketball player, Michael Jordan. It’s a great quote to use in your blog because it will be relatable to many people.

Larry Bird is one of the greatest basketball players of all time, but he also had a successful career as a head coach and general manager. Bird went on to have a successful coaching career with the Indiana Pacers when his playing career ended, and subsequently moved into the franchise’s front office. Larry Legend’s playing career and all that followed were influenced by Celtics architect Red Auerbach.

Bird learned his first important lesson in teambuilding from Auerbach’s unorthodox approach to selecting the future Hall of Famer – a move that altered the course of NBA history.

Auerbach selected Larry Bird a full year before he entered the NBA.

As a coach, general manager, and club president, Auerbach made a slew of great decisions. Still, drafting Bird following his junior season at Indiana State in 1978 was perhaps the most unexpected and creative move he ever made. Although he was technically draft-eligible, the 6-foot-7 forward did not graduate and join the NBA until 1979.

Auerbach and Boston already owned Bird’s rights by the time he entered the draft.

“I couldn’t believe it at the moment. According to the Poughkeepsie Journal, Bird stated, “I didn’t know why Red did it.”

That and hundreds of other lessons from his mentor found their way into the three-time NBA champion’s own career as a head coach and general manager.

Through his draft experience, Bird started to understand how to put together a squad.

Bird eventually returned to Indiana as the Pacers’ head coach. In his debut season with the club, he guided his team to a Game 7 in the Eastern Conference Finals against Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls. That season, he was awarded NBA Coach of the Year. Bird coached the Pacers to the NBA Finals two years later.

In 2003, the three-time NBA MVP was named President of Basketball Operations for Indiana. Bird was awarded NBA Executive of the Year after the 2011-12 season.

Bird was forced to transfer Ron Artest, Stephen Jackson, and Jermaine O’Neal as a result of the Palace’s malice. Reggie Miller has announced his retirement. Bird never had a chance with the No. 1 selection in the draft because Indiana was never a destination for free agents.

Rather, he selected, signed, and traded on the outside. After two seasons at Fresno State, Paul George was selected as the 10th overall selection in 2010. Danny Granger of New Mexico was chosen 17th overall by Bird in 2005. Lance Stephenson, Roy Hibbert, and Myles Turner have all played on winning teams or continue to do so.

David West was a free agent who signed with the Pacers. George Hill arrived as a result of a trade.

In a Poughkeepsie Journal interview, Bird also remarked of Auerbach:

“He dealt with whatever repercussions he created when he made up his mind and made a choice. That now makes a difference to me. When I do something and it doesn’t work, at least you believed it would work when you decided to do it.”

Red Auerbach taught Larry Bird a thing or two about teamwork.

Bird used the skills he acquired from his mentor to coach and build a competitive Pacers team.

Bird became the first player in HBA history to win an MVP, a Coach of the Year Award, and an Executive of the Year Award all in the same season. Every single one of those prizes has Auerbach’s imprint.

The 1980 Rookie of the Year’s approach to building a business is frequently ignored, which is understandable considering his playing career. But Auerbach had an impact on Bird’s whole playing career, and his strange — but smart — draft experience was the start of the 12-time all-GM star’s skills.

Spotrac provided the draft information.
