Juncheng Shang, a Chinese qualifier, advanced to the semi-finals of the Atlanta Open by defeating Australian Max Purcell, the 8th seed, with a score of 7-6 (3), 6-4 at the Atlanta Athletic Club on Friday night.
Ranked 89th, Shang will now face Australian Jordan Thompson, the 4th seed, in the next round.
The 19-year-old Chinese player won against American wildcard Andres Martin (6-1, 6-1) and American Ben Shelton, the top seed (7-6 (6), 6-4) before his victory over Purcell.
In earlier matches, Purcell, ranked 66th, defeated Christopher O’Connell (4-6, 7-5, 6-2) and Belgian David Goffin (6-3, 6-3).
