If you were to look at the New England Patriots and you were to look at their quarterback situation, you would be hard pressed to find a more stable starting quarterback situation than what the Patriots have going for them right now. They have a quarterback, Tom Brady, who is well past 30 years old but is still capable of leading his team to the playoffs. They have a backup, Jimmy Garoppolo, who is just 25 years old and is the future of the franchise. And they have a younger backup, Jacoby Brissett, who is just 24 years old and has been playing fairly well in his limited time as a starter for the Patriots. The only problem is: none of the three quarterbacks are on the same page when it comes to
A quarterback controversy? I’m not sure how this is possible, but I’m going to go out on a limb and say I’m pretty confident that Bill Belichick doesn’t care if Cam Newton is a quarterback or not. The Patriots have had a revolving door at quarterback for years, and that’s just how Belichick likes it. As the old adage goes, if you can’t beat them, join them.
When the New England Patriots lost Tom Brady to a season ending injury, they were stunned. The Patriots were already a Super Bowl contender with Brady, and now they were left without their best player, one of the NFL’s best. But Patriots fans shouldn’t be surprised. Belichick has been working on his backup options, and Brady’s injury might not be what it appears.Cam Newton’s hand injury raises the question of who New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick will use as quarterback in 2021. Will Alabama’s Mac Jones be able to back up Newton, or will the veteran make way for a newcomer? These are the questions every Patriots fan (and more than a few haters) are asking themselves this season. After Newton injured his hand during OTAs, Belichick could be in for an unexpected controversy at quarterback.
Patriots’ quarterback position is overstretched heading into 2020

In Newton, they have a former NFL MVP who led his Carolina Panthers team to the Super Bowl in 2015. With Jones, whom the Patriots selected 15th overall in the 2021 NFL Draft, Belichick has a young passer who won an NCAA national championship and was a Heisman Trophy finalist in his final year with the Alabama Crimson Tide. There are two other QBs on the Pats’ roster who could also play in the league. Brian Hoyer returns for another season after supporting Tom Brady in New England for several years. There’s also Jarrett Stidham. Stidham arrived in Foxborough as a fourth-round selection from Auburn in 2019. He handed out four assists, including two as a rookie backing up Brady. The 6-foot-9 QB was briefly the Patriots’ presumptive starter between Brady’s departure and Newton’s arrival in the 2020 offseason, but that didn’t come to pass. With Newton out with COVID-19 and other minor injuries and ineffective performances, Stidham got playing time in 2020. In limited action, he threw 22 passes for 256, two touchdowns and three INTs. Belichick picked Jones, at least in part, because of those weak numbers. The stats are also the reason many doubt Stidham’s future as a starter with the Patriots.
Jarrett Stidham moved to the point guard spot after Cam Newton’s arm injury
After Cam Newton’s injury, it was Patriots QB Jarrett Stidham who showed the most control of the offense and the ability to throw downfield to wide receivers. In Friday’s session, Mack Jones leaned heavily on checkdowns. – Doug Kyed (@DougKyed) June 4, 2021 All of the Patriots’ quarterbacks participated in the OTAs of the offseason in early June, including Newton. However, Newton suffered a minor hand injury during practice, so Belichick decided to bench the veteran until training camp. The injury was a potential opportunity for Jones to impress Belichick and McDaniels. But while reports on Jones during OTAs have been relatively positive overall, it was Stidham who especially added to the mix when Newton was out of action. NESN reporter Doug Keadtweeted, that Stidham, who has two years of experience with McDaniels system, looks much more comfortable and fluid when taking reps in training after Newton’s departure.
Despite what Bill Belichick says, the battle for the Patriots’ QB job is wide open
Belichick told the Providence Journal after selecting Jones on game night: Cam Newton was our quarterback, and Jones and another quarterback, Jarrett Stidham, had to step up and compete with the veteran. Even if this typically eccentric non-response means the head coach expects Newton to be the starting QB in Week 1, that’s far from a guarantee in June. The 2020 season was statistically by far the worst for Newton, while he started the most games for his team. He notched career reserves – not counting the 2019 season lost to a foot injury – in yards (2,657), TDs (242) and touchdowns (8), which are just the latest figures in a downward trend in stats following an MVP season. Newton’s 1,071 throw attempts and 322 sacks have also taken a toll on his body, even though he’s 6-foot-4 and weighs 245 pounds. As Cam Newton’s hand injury shows, the veteran might be out of the game. The New England Patriots will have a battle for the head coach job during training camp and likely throughout the 2021 season. Don’t be surprised if it becomes a three-way battle with Jarrett Stidham.
