Carson Wentz’s ascension to the role of starting QB in the NFL didn’t last long, as he suffered his second significant injury in the last 6 months. The Eagles will be without their franchise quarterback for the remainder of the season after he re-injured his wrist at the end of the first quarter of the Eagles’ Week 14 matchup with the Colts…

The Philadelphia Eagles and Indianapolis Colts will play each other this Sunday in the NFL Wild Card Round. Things have looked a bit bleak for the Colts, who have blown three-straight games by an average score of 33-3. The Eagles, who won their first playoff game since the 2012 season, will have something to say about that this weekend.

The Indianapolis Colts are a team that has been floundering for much of this century. However, with a new owner, and general manager, and a new coach, there is potential for the Colts to be a team that can contend for the AFC Championship.. Carson Wentz’s return to form as a Pro Bowl quarterback had to be put on hold by the Indianapolis Colts. Already, the Super Bowl winner has his foot firmly planted on the gas pedal.

Wentz, who will be 29 in December, is obviously eager to get back on the field after recent foot surgery. His eagerness to get on the field by any means possible, on the other hand, may cause major difficulties for him and his new club.

Carson Wentz’s latest news:

• He’s “antsy” and wants to rush recovery, but the Colts won’t allow him.

• Started doing walkthrough repetitions but hasn’t started the more intensive phase of rehab yet. How he reacts to it informs the squad whether he’ll be able to go. 1st week

• Reich prefers two weeks of practicing with him before the opening.

Wentz is feeling “antsy” right now, according to Colts head coach Reich, Frank.

Reich’s remarks to media on Wednesday, Aug. 18 were transcribed by the Colts’ official website. When a player is injured, the fourth-year head coach made it obvious that his quarterback is already suffering from cabin fever.

“As I would anticipate, [Wentz] wants to push the boundaries. But he has to be patient and concentrate on the mental side of things for the time being, and we need to let things run their course. But, at the same time, there is a time to push things, and we will continue to do so as needed.”

On Aug. 15, Wentz did not play in the Colts’ preseason opener. Both of the team’s final preseason games are likely to be without the 2017 Pro Bowl pick. The quarterback reps are now divided between Sam Ehlinger, a rookie from Texas, and Jacob Eason, a 2020 fourth-round selection.

The Colts have not ruled Wentz out for Week 1 against Russell Wilson and the Seattle Seahawks as of publishing.

Wentz and the Colts can’t afford to make a mistake here.

It’s difficult to blame Wentz for wanting to return to the field. He’s been plagued by injuries in recent years, missing the Philadelphia Eagles’ Super Bowl run in early 2018 due to a ruptured ACL.

Wentz, on the other hand, should understand the importance of patience and not wanting to hurry back from an injury at this stage. This isn’t a case of someone skipping work due to a stomach ache or an ingrown toenail. He’s getting back to work following foot surgery for an ailment he’d been ignoring for years.

The Colts play the Seahawks on Monday, Sept. 13, one day after their season opener. It would also be six weeks to the day after Wentz had surgery. When Wentz initially had surgery, the club said he would be out for 5 to 12 weeks.

Wentz’s best bet is to take things one day at a time. The Colts may be without him indefinitely if he hurries back and aggravates his condition. For a club aiming to reach the AFC Championship Game for the first time since January 2015, it is far from ideal.

The Colts will also face the Seahawks and the Los Angeles Rams in their first two games, with the latter including NFL icon Aaron Donald at defensive tackle. Saving Wentz for a Week 3 game against the Tennessee Titans, a club with a far less intimidating defense, suddenly doesn’t seem like such a bad idea.

If Wentz isn’t able to play full strength in Week 1, the Colts should start Eason or Ehlinger.

Recovery timeframes are often little more than educated guesses. They’re time frames that don’t account for the potential of a significant setback.

Let’s pretend Wentz isn’t ready to play at full power in Week 1, which might happen. The Colts must decide whether to play Wentz, who is at 85 percent and may need another week of recovery, or to hand the ball over to Eason or Ehlinger in the opener.

In 2018, the Eagles faced a similar scenario with Wentz and the reigning Super Bowl MVP, Nick Foles. Doug Pederson, the Eagles’ head coach, started Foles for the first two games before bringing back Wentz for a Week 3 matchup against the Indianapolis Colts.

History has an uncanny ability to repeat itself. For the Colts’ sake, it may be in everyone’s best interests to play it cautious with Wentz in the early going to keep him healthy and fresh for the stretch run.
