American wildcard McCartney Kessler secured a spot in the semi-finals of the Cleveland Open at Jacobs Pavilion by defeating Dutchwoman Arantxa Rus with a score of 6-4, 6-2. Kessler, ranked No 98, will now face No 5 seed Anastasia Potapova from Russia in the next round.
In earlier matches, Kessler managed to win against wildcard Katrina Scott (6-1, 4-6, 6-4) and Chinese Xinyu Wang, the No 4 seed (3-6, 6-4, 6-2).
Rus, ranked No 95, also had tough battles in the previous rounds, beating Italian Lucia Bronzetti (6-3, 7-6 (4)) and Bulgarian Viktoriya Tomova, the No 7 seed (6-3, 6-3).
