It’s been five years since Cristiano Ronaldo left Old Trafford for the Bernabeu in a world record £80m move after nine seasons with the Red Devils. After everything he’d achieved, it was hard to believe that Ronaldo would leave but that’s exactly what happened. The Madrid outfit also offered him bonuses of £30m each year, which he couldn’t turn down.

The Los Angeles Lakers’ 2020-21 NBA season did not proceed as planned. Following the title the club won the previous year, LA had sky-high hopes after adding players like Dennis Schroder and Montrezl Harrell to an already strong squad. Los Angeles’ ambitions were thwarted by injuries, and the team fell in the first round of the playoffs.

Now, Schroder and Harrell play for separate clubs, and the former made news when he allegedly rejected down a large contract offer from the Lakers and subsequently accepted a much lesser contract. However, Schroder’s choice may have been beneficial for the club, since it enabled LA to bring in superstars like Russell Westbrook and Carmelo Anthony, while also keeping Anthony Davis pleased.

After one season together, Dennis Schroder and the Los Angeles Lakers parted ways.

When the Lakers acquired Schroder from the Oklahoma City Thunder in a trade last summer, they had high expectations for him. In 2019-20, he had one of his finest seasons of his career with OKC, averaging 18.9 points and 4.0 assists. He also had a great year shooting the ball, with a field goal percentage of 46.9% and a 3-point percentage of 38.5 percent.

With the Lakers, his scoring statistics dropped, which was expected. Last season, Schroder averaged 15.4 points per game on 43.7 percent shooting for LA. In addition, he only hit 33.5 percent of his long-range shots.

According to CBS Sports, the 2013 first-round selection averaged 5.8 assists per game and performed well enough to earn a four-year, $84 million contract offer from LA. He, on the other hand, declined it, which turned out to be a huge mistake.

Schroder had a poor postseason performance, averaging 14.3 points on 40% shooting. In Game 5 of the Lakers’ first-round playoff defeat to the Phoenix Suns, he went scoreless on 0-of-9 shooting.

His value dropped as a result, and he and the Lakers parted ways this summer. In August, Schroder agreed to a one-year, $5.9 million contract with the Boston Celtics.

Anthony Davis was allegedly irritated with Dennis Schroder.

Schroder’s choice to reject down a hefty contract offer from the Lakers allowed his now-defunct club to totally overhaul its squad.

Carmelo Anthony, Kendrick Nunn, Malik Monk, Trevor Ariza, Wayne Ellington, Kent Bazemore, Dwight Howard, and Rajon Rondo have all joined the Lakers after trading for Russell Westbrook.

The final two people on that list helped the Lakers win the 2020 championship, with Rondo in particular proving to be a key tool not just for the Lakers’ championship run but also for Anthony Davis’ success.

During the Lakers’ 16 playoff games in 2020, Rondo averaged 8.9 points and 6.6 assists in 24.7 minutes per game. When the two played for the New Orleans Pelicans together a few seasons ago, he proved to be a great teammate for Davis. During the 2017-18 playoffs, Rondo led the NBA with 12.2 assists, while Davis averaged 30.1 points and an NBA-best 13.4 rebounds.

To put it another way, Rondo understands how to set up Davis for success.

Schroder, on the other hand, does not seem to have done so.

A source familiar with the Lakers’ 2020-21 season told Bleacher Report’s Eric Pincus that Davis was unhappy when Schroder played point guard because he didn’t offer him the kinds of opportunities down low that Rondo did the previous season.

Davis’ displeasure, according to Pincus, may have played a part in the Lakers’ decision not to re-sign Schroder.

Davis isn’t the kind of player to put a teammate under the bus, so this might be real or simply rumor. It’s critical to keep him and LeBron James happy, and they’ll almost certainly be pleased if they’re contending for titles, which Schroder’s departure may have just made possible.

In 2021-22, Anthony Davis, LeBron James, and the Lakers may contend for a championship.

The Lakers can easily contend for a championship this season if they stay healthy now that Schroder has gone on and they have a Big Three with quality role players surrounding them.

Not only can LeBron James and Russell Westbrook attack the rim with the best of them, but they can also pass with the best of them. Davis has also proved to be an all-time great rim protector, and the Lakers have terrific shooters surrounding those three who can be sent out to if they are double-teamed.

The fact that they are the league’s oldest club is a problem, but this Lakers team is poised for greatness. They have the ability to win another NBA title.
