“Don’t let any of those things change who you are.” Those were the last words the legendary college basketball coach Bob Knight ever said to his players before they left the court following the 1981 National Championship game. Coach Knight’s words are a powerful reminder to never let anything change who you are. When things in life are going well, it’s easy to think “Everything’s great.” However, when things aren’t going well, it is easy to get disheartened and think “No one cares about me.” But can we really let the past define who we are?

It’s easy to get caught up in all the hype surrounding the NBA and all the player movement, and it’s also easy to overlook the players we already have on our favorite teams. As an NBA fan, it’s important to remember that even the stars of the league are not immune to feeling the pressure of a new city, or a new coach, or a new system. Whether it’s the pressure of playing for a new city or a new team, or just the pressure of being part of an organization, it’s natural to feel a little apprehensive about the new experience.

When Michael Jordan retired following the 1997-1998 season, many of his peers were quick to dismiss the legendary feathered-bomber as just another athletic wannabe. That is far from the truth, however; Jordan was not just a basketball player, he was the greatest basketball player of all-time. And he was not content to just be the best, some would call Jordan an egoist, but Jordan understood that winning championships is not just a matter of being the best; it is part of the process of becoming a champion.

Carson Wentz has made it clear that Trey Lance is under his mentorship and protection.

Forget for a moment that Wentz plays for the Indianapolis Colts and Lance is a rookie with the San Francisco 49ers. These former North Dakota State quarterbacks want to stick together and help each other succeed.

Wentz says he gave Lance some simple advice

Despite an age difference of nearly 10 years, Wentz and Lance bonded through their shared experience as former NDSU quarterbacks.

Their relationship gives Wentz, who turns 29 in December, a chance to impart his wisdom on a rookie. Lance, 21, recently attended Carson Wentz’s charity softball game to benefit his AO1 foundation in Fargo, North Dakota.

According to NBC Sports, the veteran quarterback gave Lance advice on what to expect from his first NFL training camp. Wentz shared some of the information he shared with Lance during a meeting with reporters in North Dakota.

There’s a great culture in San Francisco, a great coaching staff. So I know he’s going to do great and I’m happy for him. I keep telling him to be himself: Don’t let these things change you in who you are, your values, your approach to football. Go ahead and play.

Carson Wentz

In response, Lance said he was grateful to have Wentz in his corner and leading by example.

If he plays as well as he did early in his career, he has certainly helped people accept the transition from the FCS to the NFL, Lance said of Wentz.

Lance should definitely listen to Wentz

You can say what you want about Wentz as a quarterback, especially after his troubles in the 2020 season, but it’s hard to deny that he’s a guy who has been through a lot in the NFL.

Wentz has had numerous injuries, some as early as his first five seasons. Still, he led an injury-plagued Eagles offense to an NFC East divisional victory in 2019.

When the Chief Counsel speaks, listen. If this player has experienced all the benefits of being a second place, MVP candidate and all the benefits of watching his team win the Super Bowl while sitting on the bench, give him your full attention.

Wentz knows what he’s talking about and knows how teams work and how they fall apart. Lance should listen to Wentz and apply that simple logic when the 49ers open camp in July.

As for Jimmy Garoppolo, it’s not his job to mentor a quarterback who could replace him later in the season. Garoppolo is in the middle of his career and is not an aging quarterback about to graduate. If Wentz wants to provide insight that Garoppolo can’t, who is Lance to turn him down?

October 24 could be a fun Sunday for North Dakota State fans

North Dakota State quarterbacks. I like this picture on Trey Lance’s IG story because it gives a good idea of his size: He stands next to Carson Wentz and appears to be about the same size as Wentz, who is 5-foot-7 and weighs more than 230 pounds.

Depending on how the 49ers’ first two months go, Lance could be in the mix for 24. October to be the quarterback.

Why is this Sunday night so important? The 49ers host Wentz and the Colts on the same night atSunday Night Football. Fans will be able to watch two former North Dakota Bison quarterbacks battle it out on national television.

The Colts should be one of the top two teams in the AFC South division, even though Trevor Lawrence and Urban Meyer are now with the Jaguars. If the 49ers stay healthy, they could compete for the NFC West division crown.

Who knows? This game on national television could foreshadow the next Super Bowl between two quarterbacks who are quickly becoming good friends.
