Who are the defending US Open champions?

Novak Djokovic and Coco Gauff are the men’s and women’s defending champions respectively.

Djokovic won his 24th Grand Slam singles title and his fourth in New York with a 6-3, 7-6, 6-3 win over Russia’s Daniil Medvedev.

On the women’s side, Gauff won her first career Grand Slam singles title with a 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 win over Belarus’ Aryna Sabalenka.

Who are the past winners of the US Open?

First held in 1881 as the US National men’s singles and doubles championships in Newport, Rhode Island, the tournament has been held every year for the past 142 years. The women’s singles draw was held for the first time in 1887, followed by women’s doubles in 1889 and then the mixed doubles event in 1892. The tournament has been held at nine different locations, moving to Forest Hills, New York at the start of the Open Era and then to its current location in Flushing Meadows in 1978.

Past winners include six-time champion Serena Williams, five-time champion Roger Federer, four-time champion Rafael Nadal, four-time champion Novak Djokovic and two-time champions Naomi Osaka and Venus Williams.

The record for most women’s singles title in the Open Era is jointly held by Chris Evert and Serena Williams, who both won six titles each. On the men’s side, Federer, Pete Sampras and Jimmy Connors are tied for the Open Era record with five titles each.

What is the prize money for the tournament?

A record $65 million in prize money was on offer for the 2023 US Open.

The men’s and women’s singles champions each earned $3 million each, while players losing in the first round at Flushing Meadows earned $81,500.

Who is the Tournament Director?

Former WTA CEO Stacey Allaster took over as tournament director in 2020. Allaster also serves as the USTA’s chief executive of professional tennis. She is the first female director in the tournament’s 140-year history.
