Following Jon Rahm’s Historic U.S. Open Victory, Who Is the Highest-Ranked Golfer Without a Major Championship?

Ah, the U.S. Open. A classic, long-running, old-school, par-3-golf tournament that brings out golf fans from all walks of life. It’s where youngsters can learn from the best, and where legends meet and greet. Even if you’re not a golf fan, it’s still a must-watch for the drama and entertainment that fills those 18 holes.

Over the past couple of years, one of the most exciting aspects of the US Open Championship was watching the play of 21-year-old Jon Rahm. After an impressive showing in the US Open Qualifier earlier this year, Rahm went up against the best field at Oakmont Country Club and won, becoming the youngest golfer to win the US Open since Tiger Woods in 2000.

Jon Rahm had to wait four years to play in his first U.S. Open. In his fifth year on the PGA Tour, Rahm has gone from hopeful upstart to major championship favorite. He won the WGC-Mexico Championship last week to reach the final of the U.S. Open, where he defeated Dustin Johnson on Sunday to bring the trophy home to the Rio Grande Valley.. On Sunday, when the final groups played at Torrey Pines, 10 golfers were tied or within one shot of each other in the U.S. Open standings, making the USGA’s From Many to One slogan the most brilliant marketing move we’ve seen in a long time. And these are famous players, many of whom have already won at least one major, including US Open winners Rory McIlroy, Brooks Koepka and defending champion Bryson Deschambault. But that number was reduced to two an hour later when chaos broke out on the back nine. John Rahm and 2010 Open winner Louis Oosthuizen were the only players with a chance to win their third major this year.

Rahm, of course, emerged victorious and won his first major championship, shedding the label of best player in the world without a major title no one wants to wear. But it is clear that this label must now be given to someone else, and we choose the easy way out by simply referring to the world rankings, where things have certainly changed since Ram’s historic victory.

Rahm, 26, entered the 2021 US Open with 19 starts in the majors, 18 of them as a professional (he was the top amateur at the 2016 US Open at Oakmont). In those 19 starts, he has seven top-10 finishes, including a T-5 at this year’s Masters and a T-8 at last month’s PGA Championship.

But on Sunday, Rahm finally broke through with an excellent round of 67 at Torrey Pines. He made the decisive moves on the 17th and 18th. He became the first US Open winner to make birdie on the final two holes since Tom Watson at Pebble Beach in 1982.

After a bogey on the 17th hole. Oosthuizen needed an eagle in the 42nd minute to reach the play-off with Ram, but a miss in the final minute denied him his chance. He had to put his second shot away, which meant he had to hit his third shot from the fairway, which he did not do. But at least he made a birdie to finish second.

With the one-shot victory, Ram not only took the monkey out of the major championships, but also became the first Spaniard to win the U.S. Open and the fourth Spaniard to win a major championship, along with Seve Ballesteros, Jose Maria Olazabal and Sergio Garcia. The victory also brought Rahm back to the top of the Official World Golf Ranking, overtaking former runner-up Justin Thomas and ending Dustin Johnson’s 43-week lead.

The top four players in OWGR are currently Rahm, Johnson, Thomas and Collin Morikawa (who was also present on Sunday), all of whom have won major titles. However, this is not the case for the fifth player in the world.

Xander Schauffele became the highest ranked player in the world without a title.

This is it, guys. Xander Schauffele is now fifth on the world ranking list and is the highest ranked player in the world who has not yet won a major.

But you can’t say the four-time PGA Tour winner didn’t prepare to win the main event, as he had nine top 10s in 17 starts in the main event. On Sunday, Schauffele was one of those who briefly battled for the win, but like many others, he faltered on the difficult back nine at Torrey Pines and finished seventh.

This was Schauffel’s fifth appearance at the U.S. Open, and all five times he finished in the top-10. He is the first player to finish in the top 10 in his first five U.S. Open starts since Bobby Jones in the 1920s.

There are now nine players in the top 20 without a major championship

.

Schauffele may be the highest ranked player on the Official World Golf Ranking without having won a major, but he is one of nine players in the top 20 with that label, the others being Patrick Cantley, Tyrrell Hatton, Victor Hovland, Tony Finau, Daniel Berger, Scotty Scheffler, Harris English and Paul Casey.

Here’s how the top 20 has changed since the US Open.

  1. John Rahm
  2. Dustin Johnson
  3. Justin Thomas
  4. Colleen Morikawa.
  5. Xander Schauffele
  6. Bryson Deschambault.
  7. Patrick Cantley.
  8. Brooks Koepka
  9. Patrick Reed.
  10. Rory McIlroy.
  11. Tyrrell Hutton.
  12. Louis Oosthuizen
  13. Webb Simpson
  14. Victor Hovland
  15. Tony Finau
  16. Hideki Matsuyama
  17. Daniel Berger
  18. Scotty Scheffler.
  19. Harris English.
  20. Paul Casey.

The winners of the non-major championships will have their next chance to win their first title at Royal St. John’s. St. George’s Open, which begins on the 15th. Early July.

COMPARED TO: Who is the lowest ranked golfer to ever win a major championship?A win at the U.S. Open by Jon Rahm over a field of very good golfers is a huge moment in golf. But, it is difficult to know how Rahm’s win will influence his standing in the world rankings. He is currently ranked 47th in the world, but he has seen his ranking slide, and he is now on the outside of the top 50. He has not won a PGA Tour event since 2014, and he was winless on the European Tour for most of the last two seasons..
