Hall of Famer Grant Hill Ready to Become Face of USA Men’s Basketball After 2020 Tokyo Olympics

Grant Hill is a United States Basketball Hall of Famer. He was a star with the Duke University Blue Devils college basketball team in the 1990’s and early 2000’s. Hill was drafted in the first round of the NBA Draft in 1994 by the Orlando Magic, and Hill played for the Magic until 2003. He then went to the Detroit Pistons for two seasons, and then played with the Phoenix Suns for the 2006-2009 seasons.

As the 2020 Olympic Games draw near, the United States Men’s Basketball Team is making a push to bring home its first gold medal in men’s basketball since the 1992 Olympic Games. Some of the names in the USA Men’s Basketball Team have been well known and well respected. Who can forget LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, Kevin Durant, Steph Curry, or Chris Paul?

In 2020, the United States will host the Olympics, and the country is looking for athletes to represent the host nation. The 2020 men’s basketball team will be coached by Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski, who has been involved in the sport for over 50 years.

Jerry Colangelo has been the face of Team USA Basketball for a long time, but that will change after the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Since 2005, Colangelo has served as the managing director of USA Basketball. After a disappointing bronze medal performance in the 2004 Athens Olympics, he has returned Team USA to the top of the international basketball scene. Team USA has won gold in three consecutive Olympics and will compete in Tokyo for a fourth.

However, Colangelo’s last big event as executive director will be the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, as he prepares to transfer the baton to NBA great Grant Hill.

Grant Hill has a long list of accomplishments both on and off the basketball court.

Hill was a Duke University All-American. He was a seven-time All-Star and five-time All-NBA performer whose career might have matched that of some of the league’s greatest players if he hadn’t been hindered by knee problems. Hill rebuilt his game despite the injuries and became an exceptional defender while being a consummate professional.

Since his retirement in 2013, the Dallas native has been extremely busy. He is a co-owner and vice chairman of the Atlanta Hawks, as well as a member of Duke’s board of trustees. Hill is a member of the NCAA board of directors and has worked as a TNT announcer for many years.

Hill’s hobbies and business activities are diverse, providing him the type of resume needed to lead Team USA men’s basketball.

After the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Hill will succeed Colangelo as managing director.

Hill will be absent from Team USA’s bid for a fourth consecutive gold medal in men’s basketball in Tokyo. Nonetheless, work on qualifying for the 2023 Basketball World Cup will begin soon after.

The 48-year-old said he is grateful for the chance and recognizes the importance of serving the United States.

According to Tim Reynolds of the Associated Press, Hill said, “Another chance to represent your nation, to serve your country in this position, that was the motivation for me.” “I think also knowing how meaningful, how big the Olympic experience was for me back in 1996 and wanting to assist replicate that experience for young guys coming through the NBA who want to be a part of it. In many respects, it’s practically a calling.”

Hill had been extremely involved in recent years, according to Colangelo, and had made a point of probing his and Mike Krzyzewski’s brains. Hill’s interpersonal abilities, according to Colangelo, made him the perfect candidate for the position.

According to Reynolds, Colangelo stated, “Grant has been around us through the years and our training camps because of connections with me, with Coach K, his college coach.” “He’s extremely aware of what’s going on. There has been a lot of discussion. There will be much more to talk about. It isn’t even rocket science. It isn’t at all. It’s all about connections, and he’s great at them, so I’m comfortable handing this forward to Grant Hill.”

Hill described the position as a “calling,” but it seems that Krzyzewski and Colangelo have been preparing him for it for quite some time.

The men’s basketball team of the United States has had a rocky path to Tokyo in recent weeks, with unexpected exhibition defeats (against Nigeria and Australia) and many health issues due to COVID-19. Still, anything less than gold for head coach Gregg Popovich and his team would be a surprise.

Kevin Durant and Damian Lillard are among the finest players in the NBA on the team’s roster. In terms of star power, no other nation can equal the United States. The exhibition defeats, on the other hand, demonstrated that Team USA is far from invincible.

Hill may not be in Tokyo, but he will most certainly be rooting for Team USA before taking over Colangelo’s responsibilities.
