His Latest QB Move Shows Bill Belichick Will Forgive Anyone Who Might Help the Patriots Win

As the Patriots have made it their mission to win their fifth and sixth Super Bowls, they have not been shy about adding players to help them do that. New England’s newest addition is former Oakland Raiders quarterback Derek Carr, who has agreed to a three-year deal worth $30 million. Carr helped the Raiders reach the Super Bowl last season, but was benched after struggling in a Week 16 loss to the Denver Broncos.

It’s no secret that Patriots quarterback Tom Brady loves to possess the football. He has more than 6,000 completions in his career, and he’s thrown at least 44 touchdowns in every season since 2000. Still, last year he threw the ball more than any other player in the NFL, and he finished with the league’s second-best passing rating.

If you had been watching the Super Bowl, you would have seen one of the most remarkable Super Bowls ever. The New England Patriots showed how they still get it done, even with a backup quarterback. Tom Brady is still the best quarterback in the NFL, but after a terrible season, he was left off the Patriots first 3 game roster. A few weeks ago, Brady was placed on the injured reserve, but has now been removed from the list. He has been given a clean bill of health, and will be ready to play in week 1 of the season.. NFL training camps have been in session for just over a week, which is little time to make significant personnel choices. In Year 2 of the post-Tom Brady era, though, it has been long enough for Bill Belichick to contemplate adding to the New England Patriots’ quarterback pool.

The presence of another arm in camp by Belichick has no bearing on the fates of incumbent Cam Newton and rookie Mac Jones. What that implies for the rest of us is that, contrary to his gruff reputation, Belichick doesn’t carry grudges when it comes to improving the Patriots.

On Thursday, Bill Belichick conducted auditions at Patriots camp.

According to ESPN, Belichick invited five guys to the New England training facility on Thursday, but only one of them, former Ole Miss quarterback Jordan Ta’amu, received significant attention.

In 2018, Ta’amu was second in SEC passing yards behind Tua Tagovailoa, but he went undrafted the following spring. In 2019, the Houston Texans invited him to training camp, and Ta’amu went on to play in the XFL until the pandemic ended the season and the league folded. Before the start of the season, the Chiefs signed the quarterback in April 2020 and assigned him to their practice squad.

Andy Reid let Ta’amu go in the middle of the season. He spent time on the practice squad of the Detroit Lions before returning to the Chiefs. In May, Kansas City released him for the second time, and the Baltimore Ravens gave him a look at minicamp.

When Belichick called this week, Ta’amu became the camp’s sixth quarterback. The Patriots have been examining Jarrett Stidham, Brian Hoyer, and Jake Dolegala in addition to Newton and Jones.

With Ta’amu’s arrival, Belichick was able to bring the two quarterbacks together for the longest day of the Patriots’ lengthy, losing 2020 season.

Cam Newton and Jordan Ta’amu both tested positive for COVID-19, albeit at different times.

When difficulties developed in early October, the Patriots were preparing to fly to Kansas City for a Week 4 matchup. On Friday night, just hours before the Patriots were to board their aircraft, Newton tested positive for COVID-19.

The Patriots’ preparations were put on hold, and it was possible that the game planned for Sunday might be rescheduled for Monday or Tuesday. The Chiefs then announced that Ta’amu had also tested positive, just as the football world was processing the news.

The turning moment came at Ta’amu. The delay was made public nearly immediately by the league administration.

The NFL rescheduled the game for 7:05 p.m. on Monday after no further adverse samples were discovered by Sunday morning. Belichick chose to fly the Patriots out of Boston on the morning of the game, rather of taking any extra risks.

The Chiefs won 26-10, and the Patriots traveled home after the game for their longest day of the season. Patrick Mahomes threw two touchdown passes.

What does Bill Belichick have on his mind?

Based on how NFL coaches typically build up their roster and practice squad before the outset of the regular season, even five quarterbacks would be considered one too many. So, with the decision to bring Ta’amu in for a look, Belichick must have something in mind.

Stidham will be the first domino to fall. He will be out for three months after having back surgery last week. If we assume Newton, Jones, and Hoyer are safe, and Jones has the potential to render Newton redundant, Dolegala and Ta’amu may face off for a place on the practice squad this month.

The problem is, the two are completely different. Dolegala is a pocket quarterback who is 6-foot-7. Ta’amu is a 6-3 dual-threat quarterback who would be perfect as a scout-team quarterback for weeks when the Patriots need to prepare for a mobile quarterback.

If that’s the case, and even if he never sees a Sunday afternoon on the field, it’s the kind of contribution that might help the Patriots win, erasing any residual animosity from a year ago.

It seems that Brian Hoyer has a gunning for Brady’s job, and he may have found a way to do so. On Thursday, the New England Patriots signed Hoyer to a two-year extension through the 2018 season. The terms of the deal were not disclosed, although the move came shortly after the team traded Jimmy Garoppolo to the San Francisco 49ers..
