Jon Gruden Resigns, but That Doesn’t Mean Derek Carr and the Raiders Are on the Brink of Disaster

Derek Carr had a rough outing against the Broncos on Sunday, but it was not necessarily the result of poor play. The Raiders are still in good shape to make the playoffs and have a great chance at winning their division.

The jon gruden is a football coach who resigned from the Oakland Raiders. It was announced on Monday, but that doesn’t mean Derek Carr and the Raiders are on the brink of disaster.

Jon Gruden is no longer the head coach of the Raiders in Las Vegas. Gruden had been the team’s head coach since 2018, but he resigned after an NFL investigation into a series of improper and insulting emails he sent over a 10-year span.

Normally, losing a head coach in the middle of the season means doom for a club, but context is crucial when evaluating the Raiders’ prospects of success for the remainder of the season in 2021.

The only reason for Gruden’s departure was the controversy. In terms of real football output, which has been a source of frustration for many coaches, the Raiders have actually been a nice surprise in 2021.

The Raiders have been handed over to now-interim head coach Rich Bisaccia, who inherits a 3-2 club with enough interesting components to keep winning and maybe make some noise.

Carr was chosen in the second round of the 2014 NFL Draft by the Raiders, who were then based in Oakland. While he hasn’t been a complete failure with the Raiders, starting 115 of 115 games since his rookie season, the results have been mixed.

Carr, on the one hand, has a huge arm and isn’t hesitant to utilize it to throw the ball down the field. Since joining the league, he has thrown for 28,501 yards and 178 total touchdowns. The negative, even this season, is that he’s struggled with precision, resulting in far too many interceptions. So far in 2021, he’s thrown eight touchdowns and four interceptions.

Anyone who has seen Carr play this season knows he’s only a play or two away from hitting his stride.

With 1,605 passing yards after five games, he’s tied for second in the NFL with Tom Brady. Henry Ruggs III, Hunter Renfrow, and Darren Waller, all explosive pass catchers, have formed a close bond with him.

A receiver or tight end who can make a quarterback’s bad passes seem good is a quarterback’s best buddy.

Carr’s success without Gruden will be determined by the Raiders’ pass catchers.

Although the importance of a competent head coach cannot be overstated, the NFL’s ultimate truth is that coaches coach and players play. Even Bill Belichick, perhaps the greatest coach of all time, has struggled to win anything significant without Tom Brady. This is just one example.

A competent coach can only help you to a certain extent. As a result, a team’s success or failure is ultimately determined by its players.

This is really positive news for the Raiders, and it gives reason to hope that they can still win this season. Carr is still surrounded by tremendous offensive skill, even if Gruden is no longer with the team. This is the same team that averages 22.6 points per game and slightly under 400 yards each week.

All Bisaccia and offensive coordinator Greg Olson have to do now is go back to work on the playbook.

Ruggs, now in his second season after being chosen No. 12 overall in 2020, has developed into the great deep threat the Raiders envisioned when they selected him. He’s capable of taking the top off any defense, and he and Carr have formed a solid bond. This season, he’s caught 28 passes for 348 yards and a score, but it’s his yards per catch (20.5) and long receptions that truly count (72). He’s a force to be reckoned with.

If Ruggs is the Raiders’ home run threat, Renfrow has emerged as the team’s Gold Glove infielder. He’s a jack-of-all-trades slot receiver who has won Carr’s confidence. He’s grabbed 28 of 38 targets for 305 yards and a score in three games. He’s a top-40 wide receiver in terms of first-down receptions, which is very remarkable.

Allow Darren Waller to continue to be the main man.

Waller, the Raiders’ 6-foot-6, 255-pound tight end, is the standout player who can keep them competitive in 2021, and they don’t need Gruden to tell them that.

As a tight end, he’s just unstoppable. He possesses the pace to run almost any route, the bulk to overwhelm lesser defenders at the moment of attack, and buttery hands. Las Vegas, like the Green Bay Packers and the Kansas City Chiefs with Davante Adams and Tyreek Hill, must continue to get the ball to Waller no matter what.

With 319 yards and two touchdowns after two games this season, he’s on pace for another 1,000-yard season.

Yes, the Raiders are coming off two straight defeats, and Gruden’s departure has definitely thrown the franchise into disarray. Regardless of the outside noise, a guy like Waller may shift the field in their favor. He’s a game-changer, and he’s the kind of guy the Raiders can rely on as they look to the future.

Even without Gruden, Las Vegas will be OK.
