In Game 4 of the 1993 NBA Finals, Michael Jordan went into overtime in a blowout victory over the Knicks and Pippen refused to go back on defense. Afterward, MJ apologized for putting his team at risk by playing an extra period in what was essentially ‘The Last Dance’.

Scottie Pippen, who was a member of the Chicago Bulls during Michael Jordan’s career, is an NBA Hall of Famer. He also happened to be one of the best players on the team and has been credited with helping MJ win six championships. In 1993, he refused to enter game 7 against New York Knicks in “The Last Dance”. MJ apologized for covering him up in the end. Read more in detail here: scottie pippen net worth.

Michael Jordan Apologized to Scottie Pippen for Covering Playoff Series Against Knicks Where Pip Refused to Go Into Game on Final Play in ‘The Last Dance’

The classic 10-part ESPN docuseries The Last Dance chronicled the Chicago Bulls’ 1994 playoff series versus the New York Knicks in Episode 7. Because Michael Jordan was a baseball player with the Birmingham Barons, Scottie Pippen was the top player and captain for the Bulls.

Pippen, on the other hand, didn’t behave like a leader in Game 3. After Phil Jackson drew up the game-winning shot for Toni Kukoc, he declined to enter the game on the final play.

Pippen didn’t believe The Last Dance would cover his choice not to play since Jordan wasn’t on the Bulls, but it did, and the small forward was outraged.

Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen discussed the 1.8 second game.

Pippen stated in his biography, Unguarded, that he and Jordan discussed the 1.8 seconds game in The Last Dance. Jordan apologized to Pippen, according to Pippen, who had editorial control over the docuseries.

“I inquired as to why the 1.8-second game had made the final edit,” Pippen wrote. “He didn’t say much other than to apologize and explain that if it had been him, he would be angry as well.” I didn’t pursue the matter any further. I knew it wouldn’t work.”

Following Pippen’s refusal to play in Game 3, Jackson replaced him with Pete Myers. Kukoc ended up scoring the game-winning basket at the buzzer, but the Bulls were furious with Pippen, who sobbed in the locker room when Bill Cartwright publicly chastised him.

Jordan phoned Jackson the day after Game 3 to discuss the incident, and the five-time MVP knew Pippen would never be free of it.

“It’ll always come back to haunt him,” Michael Jordan says of Scottie Pippen.

Pippen didn’t help himself by claiming in The Last Dance that if he could do it all over again, he wouldn’t alter anything he did in 1994. Here’s what Jordan had to say before the seven-time All-Star said that.

Jordan predicted, “It’ll always come back to bother him at some time in some discussion.” “Pip is more knowledgeable than that.”

In the Eastern Conference playoffs of 1994, the Bulls were defeated by the Knicks in seven games. After that series, Jordan, Pippen, and Jackson won three more championships together. Despite what transpired in 1994, Pippen and Jackson were able to work together.

Despite their mutual success, the former continued to bash the latter in his book.

“Phil informing me I’d chuck the ball inbounds was the most embarrassing part,” Pip says.

When discussing about Jackson and the 1.8 seconds game in his book, Pippen didn’t hold back. The Hall of Famer said that having him as the inbounds passer was insulting to the Zen Master.

“There was one guy with whom I was enraged: Phil Jackson.” Michael had vanished. This was my squad, my moment to be the hero, and Phil was handing Toni Kukoc that opportunity? Are you joking? Pippen noted, “Toni was a rookie with no rings.” “I was in my seventh year and had three rings on my finger.” By the way, I finished third in the MVP race that season, behind Hakeem Olajuwon and David Robinson. Phil warning me I’d toss the ball inbounds was the most embarrassing aspect. At the very least, you can act as a decoy while you’re on the floor. The Knicks would have defended me with two defenders. Someone would have caught a glimpse. I did the right thing by not returning to the game.”

During the 1990s, Jordan, Pippen, and Jackson won six titles and were unbeaten in the Finals. Star players and coaches are known for butting heads, and Pippen and Jackson did so in 1994.

Jordan and Jackson, on the other hand, were never out of sync, making their partnership one of the most remarkable in NBA history.
