The No 5 seed, Russian Daria Kasatkina, narrowly defeated Kazakh Yulia Putintseva 6-4, 1-6, 7-6 (6) to advance to the semi-finals of the Ningbo Open at the Yinzhou Tennis Center on Friday.
Ranked No 11, Kasatkina will face the winner of the match between Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia, the No 6 seed, and Spaniard Paula Badosa, the No 8 seed, in the next round.
Prior to her latest win, the Russian also triumphed over Katerina Siniakova (1-6, 6-3, 6-2).
Putintseva, ranked No 32, defeated American Caroline Dolehide (6-2, 6-0) and German lucky loser Ella Seidel (6-4, 6-4) in the earlier rounds of the Ningbo tournament.
