On Friday, Peter Lundgren’s children announced the tragic passing of the former top player and coach of Roger Federer at age 59. Their heartfelt message reads, “Rest in peace Dad. One of the best has unfortunately left us far too soon. A coach, player, friend, and father. An inspiration and helping hand for many, both on and off the court. The impression you made and the memories will always live on.”
Lundgren had a successful career in tennis in the 1980s, reaching a career high of world No 25 and making the fourth round of Wimbledon in 1989. He also won three ATP World Series titles in San Francisco, Rye Brook, and Cologne.
As a coach, Lundgren guided players like Marcelo Rios, Marat Safin, Stan Wawrinka, and Grigor Dimitrov to success. However, he is best known for coaching Roger Federer from 2000 to 2003, helping the Swiss player achieve his first major title at the 2003 Wimbledon championship. Lundgren was a beloved figure in the tennis community, known for his humor, approachability, and coaching expertise.
