Qinwen progresses to the final at the Wuhan Open

The Chinese player, ranked No 7, is set to face Aryna Sabalenka, the top seed, in the next match. Sabalenka, the two-time defending champion in Wuhan, has a 16-match winning streak at the tournament.

Qinwen has become the first Chinese player to reach the final of the Wuhan Open and only the second to make it to the final of any WTA 1000 series event, after Li Na. She has secured 23 wins since the end of Wimbledon, the highest number by any player on the WTA Tour during that time.

The upcoming final will mark the fourth meeting between Qinwen and Sabalenka, with Sabalenka emerging victorious in all three previous encounters in straight sets, all of which took place at Grand Slam events in the last two seasons.

Qinwen secured wins against Jacqueline Cristian from Romania (6-2, 6-4), Leylah Fernandez from Canada (5-7, 6-3, 6-0), and Jasmine Paolini from Italy, the No 3 seed (6-2, 3-6, 6-3) earlier in the week.

In previous rounds of the tournament, Wang, ranked No 51, defeated Caroline Dolehide from the USA (6-4, 6-0), Lucia Bronzetti from Italy (4-6, 6-2, 6-4), Jessica Pegula from the USA, the second seed (6-3, 7-5), and Ekaterina Alexandrova from Russia (4-6, 7-5, 7-6 (6)).

  • Aryna Sabalenka defeated Coco Gauff (4): 1-6, 6-4, 6-4
