Golf legend, Greg Norman had his final round of the Australian Open commentary before he was defeated by Rory McIlroy. He has been a fixture in golf for over 30 years and is widely regarded as one of the best players to ever hit a ball around on a course. His comments after McIlroy’s victory were some shade that shouldn’t go unnoticed.

One of the most exciting weeks in professional golf has just passed. Tiger Woods withdrew from next weekend’s U.S. Open, Dustin Johnson, Phil Mickelson, and many more officially left the PGA Tour to compete in the first LIV Golf event, and Rory McIlroy won a star-studded match against Justin Thomas and Tony Finau to defend his RBC Canadian Open title.
With his outstanding performance on Sunday, McIlroy, who has been vocal about his displeasure with Greg Norman and LIV Golf, didn’t only overshadow the new golf league. To add insult to injury, he then made the decision to take a merciless shot at Norman after the victory.
To achieve 21 PGA Tour victories, Rory McIlroy successfully defends his RBC Canadian Open title.
This week marks the RBC Canadian Open’s two-year comeback to the PGA Tour. When the competition was last contested in 2019, McIlroy took first place, and he returned this year to defend his crown.
He got out to a fast start, shooting a 4-under 66 and a 2-under 68 to put himself in the mix for the weekend. He entered the final round tied for the lead with Finau after shooting a 5-under 65 on Saturday.
McIlroy eclipsed the opposition league with a stunning 8-under 62 to win the RBC Canadian Open for the second time in a row, one day after the dismal LIV Golf Invitational came to an end. After Thomas matched him on the 16th hole on Sunday, the Northern Irishman birdied the 17th and 18th holes to claim the 21st PGA Tour victory of his career.
Evidently, McIlroy had some more drive that helped him achieve the historic victory.
After winning, McIlroy viciously attacked Greg Norman of LIV Golf.
Given the recent success of LIV Golf, McIlroy has been among the PGA Tour’s staunchest advocates. He has openly said that he would never leave the PGA Tour for any amount of money and has already criticized Mickelson for backing the new league.
McIlroy now has an adversary in Norman, the brains behind LIV Golf. Coincidentally, the two major winners had 20 PGA tour wins each going into Sunday.
Knowing that, McIlroy used it as motivation to humiliate Norman on what he anticipated would be his great weekend. McIlroy immediately went for the kill after collecting his 21st victory to overtake Norman.
He sarcastically said to CBS Sports’ Amanda Balionis on the 18th green, “This is a day I’ll remember for a long time, 21st PGA Tour victory, one more than someone else.” That gave me a little more motivation today, and I was thrilled to finish.
For McIlroy, embarrassing LIV Golf with a caliber of play the upstart league could only aspire to match wasn’t enough. He needed to communicate to Norman that this is a fight that he wants to win.
