I made the decision to prioritize my health, undergo proper rehabilitation, and come back stronger.
Aryna Sabalenka
“I believe that taking a short break was crucial for me,” Sabalenka shared with the WTA Tour. “I have faced many challenges since March and it was ongoing. Mentally, I now feel rejuvenated and prepared. This break was much needed and I am ready to return.”
“I made the choice to focus on my health, undergo extensive rehabilitation, and come back stronger. I dedicated two weeks to rehab, involving numerous exercises, treatments, and recovery techniques,” she said. “It was a lot of work, with my entire day filled with exercises. It felt like time to relax, yet I was still working out. Then I gradually started practicing again. So far, I am progressing well.”
This week’s top seed, Sabalenka will kick off her run in Washington against either Katie Volynets or Kamila Rakhimova. She could potentially face former world No. 1 Victoria Azarenka in the third round. Sabalenka understands the importance of regaining match fitness as she prepares for the upcoming US Open in New York in a month’s time.
“I have been out of competition for some time. I feel the need to rebuild my confidence and level before heading to the US Open. I need to get some matches under my belt, and that’s why I’m here.”
