Sabalenka secures third consecutive victory in Wuhan with defeat over Zheng

Top-seeded Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka emerged victorious against 5th seeded Chinese player Zheng Qinwen with a score of 6-3, 5-7, 6-3, clinching the Wuhan Open title at the Optics Valley International Tennis Center on Sunday.

The intense match lasted over two hours and 41 minutes, with Sabalenka securing her 17th WTA Tour title.


Sabalenka has now extended her unbeaten streak to 17 matches at the WTA 1000 event in Wuhan, where she previously triumphed in 2018 and 2019. This year marks the return of the tournament to the calendar, with the two-time defending champion securing a three-peat.

Leading up to her victory, Sabalenka defeated Katerina Siniakova (6-4, 6-4), Yulia Putintseva (1-6, 6-4, 6-0), Magdalena Frech (6-2, 6-2), and Coco Gauff (1-6, 6-4, 6-4).

On the other hand, Zheng, ranked 7th, overcame Jaqueline Cristian (6-2, 6-4), Leylah Fernandez (5-7, 6-3, 6-0), Jasmine Paolini (6-2, 3-6, 6-3), and Xinyu Wang (6-3, 6-4) in earlier rounds of the Wuhan tournament.
