Phillip Harrison was O’Neal’s father, not his biological father. He instructed him on everything. Harrison was a United States Army Sergeant who entered his life at a young age. Harrison was rough on Shaq as a kid, becoming physical with him when he needed to be disciplined. In 2016, O’Neal said that it was something he needed and that he admired Harrison.
In 2016, O’Neal told The Undefeated, “I admire him more for parenting someone else’s kid — and disciplining that youngster as if it were his own child.” “I wouldn’t be here today if it weren’t for him.” I’m delighted he took the initiative. I did some crazy things like stealing automobiles, hanging around with terrible people, and being near drug dealers.”
Shaq’s position has remained unchanged. He revealed how “doors began opening” after he learnt to listen to Harrison at home during a recent visit on The Pivot Podcast.
“I believe I was severely punished, spanked, and beaten as a result of my surroundings,” he said. “There are just two or three options for projects in Northern New Jersey: Gangs, drugs, and other bizarre behavior
“He didn’t want me to have it.” He’d say something, and if I didn’t listen… Before you get murdered out there, he said, I’m going to kill you in here. You must pay attention to what I am saying. Doors began to open and dreams began to come true once I began to listen.”

O’Neal confessed on the show that he didn’t realize Harrison wasn’t his biological father until he was 11 years old. Harrison passed away in 2013. He has subsequently met Joseph Toney, his biological father, who abandoned him when he was a child. The huge guy said that he had no resentment.
On the podcast, O’Neal added, “We’re beginning to get closer.” “I don’t harbor grudges since my life has gone just as it should.” I have a fantastic existence thanks to a man who isn’t even my biological father. He shaped me into the person I am today.”
Harrison made sure Shaq didn’t make the same errors as his teammates.
He remarked, “Whenever another athlete made a mistake, he’d bring it to my notice.” “The worst asshole I ever received was when Len Bias died. My father entered the home as if Len Bias was one of my brothers. He was losing his mind. He was weeping and grasping my hand. I’ll murder you if I ever find you using cocaine.
“I told my young stupid ass, ‘Bro, we drink Pepsi.’ He was yelling at me and then sat me down and said, “Look at this, he just threw his life away.”
“That’s why I never experiment with drugs or alcohol.” It took a lot of self-control, and I had to be touched up a few times, but all I can say is thank you. Because I paid attention, I was able to live my life and achieve what I wanted.”
Shaq claims that having a father has made him more likable.

O’Neal understands that times have changed and that spankings are no longer effective. He claims that he has become a more pleasant guy after becoming a parent.
“Being a father made me more likeable,” he said. “You know how sports are.” When I lose, I rip up my home. I’m furious. I’m not breaking anything, but as soon as you have a child, as soon as you open the door, everything changes.
“You have to be courteous to females, particularly.” It makes no difference to the youngsters whether you win or lose. I’ll always protect, provide, and adore you. I wish I could have spent more time there. We had to go away for business, but when I returned, I was always there with the kids, playing dog-man.
