Prior to her victory today, the 20-year-old Russian defeated lucky loser Harriet Dart (6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (2)) and Pole Magdalena Frech (2-6, 6-3, 7-6 (5)) in the tournament. This is also the first time she has reached the quarterfinals of a WTA 1000 Series event.
Gauff, who is ranked No. 2, beat Chinese qualifier Yafan Wang (6-4, 6-4) earlier in the week. This was the first time in her career that she lost to a player younger than her on the tour. Prior to this match, she had a 7-0 record against younger players on the pro tour.
