Jannik Sinner has decided not to defend his Vienna Open title in 2024. After winning the event in 2023, he has opted to rest between the Shanghai Masters and Paris Masters. Despite already qualifying for the ATP Finals and having played 61 matches this year, Sinner has chosen to skip the Vienna Open.
He will only play in four more events this season: the Shanghai Masters, Paris Masters, Nitto ATP Finals, and Davis Cup Final 8. With only three of these events offering ranking points, Sinner’s decision not to compete between Shanghai and Paris opens the door for Alexander Zverev or Carlos Alcaraz to potentially finish the year as world No 1.
In the current ATP rankings, Sinner leads with 11,180 points, followed by Zverev with 6,875 points and Alcaraz with 6,690 points. However, Sinner has a significant number of points to defend in the next two months, and his absence in Vienna will impact his position in the Race to Turin.
Last year, Sinner won both the China Open and Vienna Open, but only reached the round of 16 at the Masters events. Despite holding a comfortable lead over his rivals, Sinner’s decision not to compete in Vienna gives them a slight hope of challenging for the year-end No 1 spot if they perform well in the remaining events of the season.
