6th seed Jessica Pegula secured a spot in the quarterfinals of the Western & Southern Open with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over qualifier Taylor Townsend at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Cincinnati on Friday night.
Pegula, currently ranked 6th, will next face Canadian player Leylah Fernandez.
In the previous round of the Cincy Open, Pegula came back from a set down to defeat Karolina Muchova with a score of 5-7, 6-4, 6-2.
Meanwhile, Townsend, ranked 53rd, advanced through tough battles against wildcard Caroline Dolehide (3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7)) and Russian player Daria Kasatkina, the 9th seed (6-1, 2-6, 6-1) in earlier rounds of the Cincy Open.
