Chinese player Qinwen Zheng, seeded No. 5, secured a spot in the semi-finals of the Wuhan Open by defeating Italian player Jasmine Paolini, seeded No. 3, with a score of 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 at the Optics Valley International Tennis Center on Friday.
Zheng, who is ranked No. 7, will now face Chinese player Xinyu Wang in the next round. Prior to her victory over Paolini, the 22-year-old Chinese player defeated Romanian wildcard Jaqueline Cristian (6-2, 6-4) and Canadian Leylah Fernandez (5-7, 6-3, 6-0).
Paolini, ranked No. 6, had previously won against Chinese player Yue Yuan (6-4, 6-3) and Russian lucky loser Erika Andreeva (6-3, 6-2) in earlier rounds of the tournament.
