Terry Bradshaw Earned $25,000 as a Rookie but Doesn’t Feel Sick About Today’s Mega Contracts

It’s always good to see athletes get paid. But is it ever fair? The NFL’s rookie pay scale is a bit of a mess. The next crop of rookies will make nearly $3 million in 2010, some of them will get bonuses for appearances and some of them will get bonuses for playing time. But, while salaries are rising for most players, inflation still means that a rookie making $25,000 in 2000 is making about $21,000 today.

As NFL players have earned more and more money playing football, some have been forced to change their opinions about how much money they should make.

Terry Bradshaw entered the NFL in 1970 as a first-round pick, but he never made more than $25,000 in his first four years. He broke the $25,000 mark in his fifth season, and he has never made less than $25,000. On the eve of the Super Bowl, Bradshaw will earn more than $25,000 for his 19th season in the league. Jerry Rice is the NFL’s all-time leader in salary, but Bradshaw has earned more combined during his career.. Read more about nfl draft pick salaries by round 2021 and let us know what you think.

Terry Bradshaw is an American football player., a Pittsburgh Steelers great, was throwing touchdown passes before Tom Brady, the league’s oldest active player, was even born.

Over the past 50 years, a great deal has changed. For almost two decades, the NFL has had 32 teams, and it may yet grow in the foreseeable future. During the 2021 season, over 30 players will earn at least $20 million in compensation. Bradshaw, who was paid a pittance compared to today’s wealthy celebrities, is unlikely to gripe about current contracts.

Terry Bradshaw is unconcerned with the present NFL salary structure.

Terry Bradshaw must have had a great time in his life when many players earned less than $100,000 a year. Imagine how much fun he’d have now.

The four-time Super Bowl winner remarked on how much the league’s economics have evolved in an interview with Parade earlier this year. It’s difficult for Bradshaw to overlook the fact that players make much more money and that teams are worth a lot of money.

Bradshaw joked with Parade that the current contracts are making him sick to his stomach.

“I signed with Pittsburgh for a $25,000 first-year salary, a $5,000 increase the following year, and a $100,000 signing bonus spread out over ten years. In today’s world, you may think, “They’re paying that man $135 million, and he ain’t worth three and a half!”

Bradshaw didn’t say who he was referring to in those remarks, if anybody at all. The Steelers legend, on the other hand, may have taken a jab at then-Los Angeles Rams quarterback Jared Goff, who received a four-year, $134 million contract in 2019. In March, the Rams traded Goff to the Detroit Lions for Matthew Stafford, who completed 67 percent of his throws for 3,952 yards, 20 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions previous season.

Bradshaw, on the other hand, made it plain that he had no animosity toward today’s players or their huge salaries.

“But, you know, sour grapes?” Bradshaw said, “I don’t have that at all.”

Million-dollar contracts were not offered to NFL players until towards the conclusion of Bradshaw’s career.

…now, at long last, Jets supporters have something to be happy about! Ryan throws a 27-yard touchdown pass to John “Lam” Jones.

Consider this if you want to see how much wages have changed over time. In 2021, the NFL’s minimum wage will be $660,000. With a $470,000 deal in 1981, Bradshaw was the second-highest paid quarterback in NFL history, according to UPI.

The first million-dollar player in the NFL didn’t appear until 1980. The New York Jets signed John “Lam” Jones, the second overall selection in that year’s NFL Draft, to a $2.1 million deal. Zach Wilson, the second overall selection in the 2021 draft, received a $35.1 million rookie contract.

Jones, by the way, never had a successful career in the league. Given that he was chosen over future Hall of Fame offensive tackle Anthony Munoz by the Jets, it’s possible that the decision was always doomed to fail. Bradshaw retired from the NFL three years after Jones and Munoz made their debuts.

Jones did, however, set the tone for what was to follow. Jones is responsible for players like Patrick Mahomes, who received a $503 million deal last year.

Modern sportsmen are always looking for new methods to make money.

Benefits of the Josh Allen trade include: On the player side, there is a substantial guarantee: 100 million dollars upon signing, plus another 50 million dollars in “functional guarantees” that extend until Year Four. On the team’s side, it’s a long-term contract. Taken away any danger of free agency, similar to Chiefs/Mahomes (which creates player empowerment). Contract runs through 2029.

Bradshaw’s $25,000 in 1970 would be worth $175,062 now, according to the Inflation Calculator. That’s fantastic news for the ordinary Joe and Jane! Given the minimum pay of almost $700,000 for an NFL player, the statistics speak for themselves.

Even yet, it’s hard to blame Bradshaw if a little part of him is upset by today’s contracts. After just two seasons as a starter, Mahomes received a $500 million deal last summer. Mike Trout, the outfielder for the Los Angeles Angels, signed a $426 million 12-year contract in 2019, the biggest in MLB history.

Because teams are becoming more valuable, players will naturally want to make as much money as possible. No one can blame Josh Allen, the Buffalo Bills’ top quarterback, for agreeing to a six-year contract for $258 million, with $150 million guaranteed.

At the very least, throughout his peak, Bradshaw earned four Super Bowl rings. That heritage, along with whatever he’s made from his Fox broadcasting career and sponsorships, seems to be worth much more to him than money from 50 years ago.

NFL players are treated like royalty—or at least something like royalty—when they sign their first contracts. Depending on what tier of experience they reached in their career, a rookie’s first contract can be worth anywhere from $1 million to $25 million, and sometimes even more than that..
