The Deshaun Watson Situation Just Took a Gut-Wrenching Turn for Texans Fans

There was a time when the Texans were an enviable franchise. From 2006 to 2012, they were consistently one of the NFL’s biggest and best stories. They were an up-and-coming team that seemed to be on the brink of a dynasty, and one of the most exciting young quarterbacks in the NFL. That was Deshaun Watson. The young Texan is now gone, and with it, any admiration for the Texans. There is no longer any reason for Texans fans to cheer for the team, and there is no hope for them to win.

Deshaun Watson’s prospects for the 2016 season looked bright, as he was included on the Texans’ opening day roster. Then, early into training camp, he went down with a torn ACL. Did he think of giving up on his dream to play pro ball? No. He had one goal in mind: to return to the field as soon as possible. And, on Monday, he made his long-awaited return.

The Houston Texans and Deshaun Watson have been fighting through a lot of adversity since Watson took the field in 2017. At the start of the season, Watson was at the center of a controversy with a bar in Gainesville, Florida. Since then, a new set of obstacles have been thrown their way, causing Watson’s future to be a major topic of discussion.

Houston Texans supporters were justifiably hopeful about the franchise’s future when Deshaun Watson inked a $156 million contract deal just before the 2020 season started. However, in the past ten months, the possibility of the Texans winning a Super Bowl in the near future has all but vanished. After all, it’s difficult to be enthusiastic about the future when your most important player wants out.

Watson’s position is further complicated by the fact that he is the subject of several lawsuits stemming from accusations of sexual assault.

The newest news on the team’s biggest star, unfortunately for Texans supporters, is a gut-wrenching turn on many levels.

Some clubs search for a starting-caliber quarterback for years. Fortunately for the Texans, they acquired a franchise-altering talent in Watson with the 12th overall selection in the 2017 NFL Draft. Despite concerns about his proclivity for throwing the ball over (32 interceptions in 38 games at Clemson), the strong-armed signal-caller immediately dispelled skeptics by launching himself into an MVP-caliber rookie season.

Watson’s ruptured ACL was an unexpected setback, but he’s shown over the past three years that his knee ailment hasn’t hampered his ability to play the position at the highest level. The 25-year-old, a genuine star who has shown he can produce without the help of a good supporting cast, raised eyebrows around the league in February when he said unequivocally that he wanted out of Houston.

Watson, of course, is still a Texan for the time being, owing to his uncertain position for the next season. Teams have found it tough to go all-in on the notion of trading for and developing around one of the NFL’s most gifted quarterbacks due to his continuing legal issues.

For Texans supporters, the Watson issue has taken a heartbreaking turn.

Texans supporters who are holding out a glimmer of hope for a settlement between Watson and the organization should give up hope completely. They could start watching highlight clips of some of the best collegiate quarterbacks who are expected to join the NFL draft soon.

While the legal process must continue, Watson’s predicament has taken a heartbreaking turn for a fan following that has had its fair share of turmoil in recent years.

The Texans have changed their mind about selling their top quarterback, according to ESPN. They’ve allegedly held early talks with other clubs regarding Watson after originally saying they wouldn’t trade him.

What is the asking price for the league’s perhaps second-best quarterback, behind Patrick Mahomes?

Houston wants a mix of five high draft choices and starting-caliber players, according to two NFL officials who spoke to ESPN’s Chris Mortensen.

What are the chances of an agreement being struck? Watson’s personal quarterback coach said that the three-time Pro Bowler intends to throw his next ball for another NFL club.

On The Adam Schefter Podcast, Quincy Avery stated, “I’m 100 percent confident he’ll be moved at some time in the near future.” “I believe the Texans have decided to move on. They’re ready to go on since he doesn’t want to be there; all they need is fair market value for him, and they’ll get a lot.”

Which NFL clubs should consider paying the great quarterback’s rumored asking price?

For Texans fans, Watson’s position seems to be grave. Instead of having the quarterback position locked down for years, Houston seems to be on the verge of resetting the clock. Watson now seems destined to be moved and continue his career with another team, something that didn’t appear to be a possibility last September.

Short-term success does not entail becoming poorer at the most crucial position in sports. The Texans, on the other hand, may set themselves up for a comeback if they play their cards well.

From a strictly football perspective, Watson is unquestionably worth a high-priced trade deal. A club seeking to get Watson can expect to spend considerably more than the Los Angeles Rams had to trade two first-round choices, a third-round pick, and Jared Goff to pull Matthew Stafford away from the Detroit Lions. He’s a better overall player than the Rams’ new starting quarterback since he’s younger, more athletic, and has more experience. Watson also has time to develop since he won’t be 26 until September.

So, which clubs are in the running for Watson in a trade?

The Philadelphia Eagles seem to be a strong contender for a trade. Jalen Hurts isn’t a sure thing, so why not go with a tried and true option? Watson would become Philadelphia’s biggest star almost immediately, and he might help the Eagles, who just parted ways with their own high-paid quarterback, turn things around.

If Houston is willing to trade Watson to an AFC club, the Miami Dolphins seem like a good match. They might give Tua Tagovailoa, a talented second-year quarterback, Pro Bowl cornerback Xavien Howard, and draft choices in exchange for a player who would certainly improve their chances of winning the Super Bowl in 2021.

On the other hand, all it takes is one club ready to give the Texans a deal they can’t refuse.

So, maybe holding off on dealing for Deshaun Watson for a little longer isn’t the best course of action for Miami.

The Texans did not do themselves any favors ahead of their Week 8 matchup against the Bengals, failing to get their starting quarterback back in the lineup. Now, the Texans are in a precarious position, as they have to play the Bengals for the second time in the season without their starting quarterback. This is not exactly the way the Texans wanted to start, and it is certainly not the ideal situation for Deshaun Watson, especially after the Texans lost to the Ravens in Week 2. Watson’s injury may have been a blessing in disguise for the Texans, as they will now get a chance to see what their backup quarterback looks like, while still having the ability to win the game. Houston fans will have to hope that Deshaun Watson starts to play. Read more about latest on deshaun watson and let us know what you think.
