While the New England Patriots were forced to place tight end Martellus Bennett on the injured reserve after he suffered a torn rotator cuff, a more obvious move was on the horizon. The Patriots have already been hit hard by injuries this season, and if the Patriots want to reach their goal of another Super Bowl victory, they can’t afford to go down the same path.

The New England Patriots are probably the most successful sports franchise in the world. Patriots owner Robert Kraft was worth $5.3 billion according to Forbes, and it has been estimated that the team itself is worth $3.1 billion. This all comes from a small, tight-knit group of players, coaches, and staff who make sure that the team has a tradition of success.

Bill Belichick may be the best head coach in NFL history. But even New England Patriots fans would no longer call him a good general manager. Indeed, a series of recent bad personnel decisions have forced him to spend a significant amount of Robert Kraft to fill some big holes in the roster.

And because general manager Belichick made a costly mistake, the Patriots – especially the Krafts – will bear the costly consequences.

Bill Belichick goes after Stephon Gilmore

.

Belichick is not in the habit of letting players dictate how he uses financial resources. He ended up getting rid of beloved stars like Richard Seymour, Randy Moss, Chandler Jones and Jamie Collins when they weren’t happy with their contracts. In 2020, however, he treated star defender Stephon Gilmore very differently.

After being named the NFL’s best defensive player in 2019, the talented defensive lineman has seen several of his peers sign lucrative contracts. Gilmore subsequently missed several workouts in training camp, raising questions about possible problems with his upcoming salary. Finally, Belichick made a surprising move and increased the salary of his main defender by $5 million for the 2020 season.

Unfortunately for Gilmore, his fourth year at Foxborough ended painfully in the 15th round. round when he suffered a partial tear in the quadriceps muscle.

Surprisingly, the four-time Pro Bowler didn’t let his injury keep him from playing against the Patriots. Gilmore didn’t show up for the volunteer activities of the organized team or the mandatory minicamp. Not content with his $7 million salary before the 2021 season, the 31-year-old has made it clear he wants a new contract. And despite being 30 years old, Gilmore looks ready to surprise the Patriots.

On Thursday, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN appeared on SportsCenter , to discuss the situation between the Patriots and their disgruntled star cornerback. According to Fowler, New England will meet with Gilmore before training camp and possibly finalize a deal. However, no trade offers were made in the league.

Why is that?

Surprisingly, the fact that the Patriots didn’t do enough to strengthen the cornerback position was cited as the reason for the lack of a trade market.

On Friday, ESPN’s Josina Anderson had a phone interview with Gilmore, who gave the reporter some clarity on what he expects from his next contract.

I just want to get what I’m worth, no matter how it goes. Every player should be paid what he’s worth. It’s like this, Gilmore told Anderson.

#Patriots. Yes, he’ll be 31 in September and he’s recovered from a serious injury, but he’s still playing at a high level. 2 years for $32 million with $23 million guaranteed and an average of $16 million a year, I think he’ll be fine. Giving
