For more than two calendar years, Golden State has been without its starting shooting guard. Klay Thompson is expected to return on Christmas Day, according to the Warriors.
Thompson has had to rehab from ACL and Achilles tendon tears in back-to-back seasons. Steph Curry has missed his fellow Splash Brother, but the good news is that he will see him again this season. Thompson has already been seen in the gym pumping iron and throwing threes.

Up to the 2019 playoffs, Thompson was generally in good health. Despite a slew of ailments, Thompson remained on the court as the Warriors made their last push for an NBA title alongside Kevin Durant. During the year, he started to have knee pain and missed the team’s final regular-season game. In the first round of the playoffs, he injured his right ankle. In game two of the NBA playoffs against Toronto, the 6-foot-6 guard strained a hamstring while still dealing with ankle pain. Thompson’s ailments and determination to play through them eventually caught up with him in game five of the finals, one game after Durant tore his Achilles. As a result, he will be out for the whole 2019-20 season.
Thompson had a devastating setback in November 2020, ripping the Achilles tendon in his right leg just as he was about to return. After that, he was out for the whole 2020-21 season.
The NBA has announced its schedule for 2021-22, which includes the big Christmas games. According to CBSSports, the Warriors will welcome back their three-point shooter on Christmas Day. Thompson will play on the road against the reigning Western Conference Champion Phoenix Suns if he returns that day.
Thompson has been greatly missed by Golden State and superstar Steph Curry.
Thompson has a lifetime three-point shooting percentage of 41.9 percent on seven tries per game. He also makes 45.9% of his shots from the field and 84.8 percent of his free throws. He is regarded as one of the best shooters of his generation. Before his injury, he had averaged more than 20 points per game in five straight seasons. Curry, a former Washington State Cougar, is also Golden State’s top wing defender, which is important since opposition teams may take advantage of his small stature on that end of the court.
Last season, Curry was forced to carry the Warriors for the whole season. During his 33rd season, the point guard led his club in regular-season minutes and was sixth in the NBA in usage rate. Out of necessity, he topped the league in scoring. Curry’s scoring average rose to 35.3 points and his minutes per game went to 34.9 in the last 15 games as Golden State clung to a shot at the playoffs play-in games. It was a terrific season for the two-time MVP, but only because it had to be.
The Warriors have a chance to make a run in the second half of the season with Klay Thompson’s comeback.
Golden State will have a little more than four months remaining in the regular season if Thompson does actually return on Christmas Day. Thompson should be rounding into form by the end of January, assuming he takes a few weeks to get back into NBA condition. The Warriors will play the Los Angeles Lakers in their last regular-season game on Thursday, April 7.
Curry, Draymond Green, James Wiseman, and Jonathan Kuminga and Moses Moody, the team’s two lottery selections in July’s draft, are expected to hold down the fort for the first few months of the season. Thompson’s return would provide a lift and a weapon that Golden State hasn’t had in almost two years. The Warriors should be ready to make another run at the NBA finals if the group gets back together.
