‘To This Day, It Makes Me Sick to My Stomach’

The event occurred in 1980 at the Moscow Olympics. After a botched handoff, teammate Natalya Guseva-Zhukova of Russia fell to her death after American runner Frank Shorter passed the ball back with his foot. The story was widely reported on by national media outlets and became an infamous part of Olympic lore.

“Why do I feel like throwing up but I don’t?” is the title of an article by ESPN’s Kevin Van Valkenburg. The article goes into detail about how athletes feel sick after winning a game, but still want to continue playing. This feeling can be attributed to the brain releasing dopamine and serotonin in response to winning. Read more in detail here: why do i feel like throwing up but i don’t.

Tucker, P.J. felt vindicated when the Milwaukee Bucks won their first championship in 50 years. Before becoming a champion, the 36-year-old veteran had previously played for three NBA clubs and spent five years abroad. Tucker, who is now a member of the Miami Heat, talked up about his NBA debut and how one horrible, humiliating moment of awareness shaped him into the well-liked player he is today.

Tucker, P.J., was a naive rookie.

The 27-55 Toronto Raptors selected Italian big man Andrea Bargnani with the first overall choice in the NBA 15 years ago. Tucker, a 6-foot-5 big from the University of Texas, was their next second-round choice. Despite the fact that he didn’t make the Longhorns until the 35th round, the North Carolina native was no slouch. Tucker was selected Big 12 Player of the Year and a Consensus All-American after a junior season in which he averaged 16.1 points, 9.5 rebounds, and 1.8 steals per game.

Tucker, on the other hand, didn’t appear like an NBA player at all, despite Bargnani’s failure to live up to the expectations of a first-round choice. Toronto only played their forward in 17 games, giving him an average of 4.9 minutes per game. In those five minutes, he was also underwhelming, averaging 1.8 points and 1.4 rebounds for a club that went on to win the division.

Tucker said in an exclusive interview on JJ Redick’s podcast The Old Man and the Three, “I didn’t play.” “And not having a chance to truly play was challenging for me. You’re a college graduate, an All-American, and all of these things. You go to the NBA thinking, “OK, now I’m going to do it here,” but you don’t. “I didn’t respond well to that.”

Tucker’s dissatisfaction with his transition from a collegiate standout to a benchwarmer was recognized by the Raptors. Rather than console Tucker or give him additional playing time, the team’s leaders turned the tables on him in a manner Tucker will never forget.

Tucker’s negative conduct was brought to the attention of the Toronto Raptors.

Tucker was plainly dissatisfied, and he made no attempt to hide it. In retrospect, the seasoned leader realized he could have handled the situation far better.

Tucker admitted to Redick, “I was horrible, I was very bad.” “I’d walk up just before practice and just do whatever I wanted, like, ‘I ain’t playing, I don’t care.’” They’ll let you go because they don’t know they’re going to cut you.”

P.J. was let go by the Raptors after only one season. But not before the team’s management made the dissatisfied youngster understand how obvious his attitude was.

“At the end of the year, I was summoned for a meeting….” And when I get there, everyone is seated. GM, [Bryan] Colangelo, the president, they’re all in there, and I’m like, ‘What’s up?’… Isn’t it true that they have the television? They only show me on the bench before the game, during the game, and after the game. They filmed everything before the game. It was a disaster. It makes me ill to my stomach even now.”

Tucker was questioned whether the horrible sensation had anything to do with the Raptors catching him off guard with the video. But the veteran blasted it down, accepting full responsibility and applauding the squad for their efforts.

Tucker added, “That [was] the finest thing that has ever happened to me in my life.” “I couldn’t tell my mother that,” she said. I’ve reached the age of maturity. Nobody can criticize me more harshly than I do. And that was the first time I’d ever seen myself in such a light.”

Tucker has established himself as a leader for the Miami Heat and other teams.

Tucker had no work when the Raptors released him, but he had plenty of perspective. P.J. performed in Israel, Ukraine, Greece, Italy, and Germany between 2007 and 2012. With the Phoenix Suns’ Summer League club in 2012, he earned his way back into the NBA. He soon secured a two-year contract in the desert.

Tucker has spent significantly more time on the court than on the bench in the years since the eye-opening footage. The stifling defense appeared in 79 games during the welcome back tour that was the 2012-13 season. For the following three seasons, he was a reliable starter, eventually starting all 82 games for the Houston Rockets in 2018-19. He even returned to Toronto after being acquired by the Raptors from the Suns in 2017.

The Bucks acquired Tucker last season to fill a need for experienced leadership and toughness. He went on to start each of Milwaukee’s final three postseason series, including all six games of the NBA Finals against his old team, the Phoenix Suns. Even with lifetime averages of 5.8 points and 5.3 rebounds, the Heat signed the veteran to a two-year, $14.3 million contract last summer.

Tucker told Redick, “It’s amusing now because I try to assist so many young people today.” “I’ll be all on them if I see them behaving like me or doing things. “No way am I letting them go down that road.”

Tucker might have easily rejected the footage, allowing his ego to take over. But, having realized his blunder, the former collegiate sensation is now a useful and well-respected veteran in the league he battled so hard to return to.

Basketball Reference provided all statistics, while Spotrac provided contract data.
