American Tommy Paul, the No 14 seed, defeated Italian Lorenzo Sonego (6-4, 6-2, 5-7, 6-2), who recently won the Winston-Salem title, to move on to the second round of the US Open on Tuesday.
Paul is ranked No. 14 and will face Max Purcell next for a chance to advance to the third round.
