Chinese player Wang Yafan advanced to the second round of the US Open after Greek player Maria Sakkari, the 9th seed, retired due to injury on Monday at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York.
Ranked 80th, Wang was leading 6-2, 0-0 when Sakkari, ranked 9th, withdrew from the match with a suspected shoulder injury.
Next, Wang will face the winner of the match between French player Diane Parry and Chinese player Xiyu Wang.
